Spine injury classifications and descriptions vary and are not universally applied by radiologists or surgeons. But AO Classification for the subaxial cervical spine has gained some popularity through recent years. One pattern of facet fracture is the highly unstable "floating lateral mass" fracture. Here is an example of 23 year old with MVA and comminuted fracture through the left articular pillar of C5. There is associated translational 3 column injury (Type C). Thankfully neurologically intact with no cord injury. Patient underwent 2 level fusion.
