My uncle made a smug comment at Thanksgiving saying, "Men built the roads, the bridges, and the skyscrapers. Women just got to sit back and enjoy it." My grandmother quietly set down her fork and said, "And who carried, birthed, nursed, fed, clothed, and kept alive every single one of those men while they were building those roads? Men love to talk about the fertility crisis but my spicy hot take is that there are just not enough good men to have babies with. This has been true forever, but now women have the means and social license to just not have kids with violent, stupid, lazy, or incompetent men.

I called my dad today just to ask him something.
He answered on the second ring and sounded so happy to hear from me.
We talked for maybe five minutes.
Before hanging up, he said, “Call me again sometime. I like hearing your voice.”
I said I would.
Then I sat there staring at my phone, realizing how often we say “sometime” to people we quietly assume will always be there.
Some calls become memories before we even realize they were important.
