Grading in 2026 be like “Good paper you’ve ‘written’. It appears to be flawless with respect to spelling, grammar and sentence structure. Yet, while it responds directly to the assignment guidelines, it has no character and doesn’t follow guidance from class discussions. B+.”😅

You've read a lot about how much China reduced extreme poverty but without much international recognition Indonesia hasn’t been far behind the Chinese! Respect.

As if classicists came in any other variety
Replying to @second_sailing
To be clear, I love both of them. We need more grouchy classicists, if anything

There is a reason why Porto has been so popular with young people from rich countries where they are priced out of the most attractive cities.

UK is “mid-Atlantic”?? What’s “mid-Atlantic” about being east of Ireland & Portugal, fully on the European continental shelf, 21 miles from France & over 3,000 miles away from the US? Europe is north, south, east & west of the UK. Can we all re-gather our brains pls.
Britain is not a European country. Britain is a mid Atlantic country. We’ve forgotten that in recent years to our profound detriment.

George W Bush named The Very Hungry Caterpillar as his favourite childhood book. It was published when he was in his 20s.

Conservatives need to understand this. AI is already ruining higher education. It's already been far more disruptive, toxic, and demotivating than wokeness & DEI ever were. Academics can't assign homework, take-home problem sets, or term papers -- too many students will use AI to cheat. We can't give assignments or run assessments in online courses -- too many students will use AI to cheat. We can't be sure what percent of any honors thesis, masters thesis, or dissertation is really the student's own work. Likewise for grant applications, grad school applications, and journal papers. Even worse, after AI-enabled 'smart glasses' with cameras and microphones become common and inconspicuous, we won't even be able to run in-class quizzes, tests, or discussions without worrying that students are secretly using their AIs to feed them answers and prompt their discussion questions. Wokeness was a serious threat to the intellectual integrity and viewpoint diversity of universities. But AI is a serious threat to the entire academic enterprise. If you're a conservative and you care at all about classic education and the Western canon, you need to wake up to the real threat here -- students offloading all reading, writing, learning, and skill development to AIs.
AI is 100x the challenge for higher ed that wokeness was. And yet academic conservatives are treating it with 1/100th the seriousness.

This is another nice size comparison map. While New Guinea and the UK appear to be of the same size on a Mercator map, NG is three-times the size of the UK. Source: buff.ly/3kx978C

I knew my teenaged daughter was in her rebellious phase but I wasn't prepared for: a. her adding off-putting fruit from a fruit cup to her pizza slices, nor b. being called a "Pizza Karen" when I challenged her on it, nor c. the wife and son laughing at the term "Pizza Karen".

You know how researchers on cooperation have been saying for ages that humans evolved to cooperate with in-group members, and it would take a non-human threat to really bring all humans together? Starting to wonder if AI could be that external threat.

Ah- Now if you think Iceland (in Single Market & even Schengen) has “independence” in that arrangement… …then it is clear that the UK joining the Single Market would be a move that gives/retains UK independence, in your judgment. Good to have on record.
Congratulations to Iceland on voting to keep their independence.

No one fucking cares. Everyone’s priced in that Trump will go on doing pointless stupid things for the rest of his term, and that it will all get quietly unwound when he goes.
President Trump is changing Lake Ontario to Lake America effective IMMEDIATELY.
