Ethical quandary: If mice learn to tap dance, should we let them?
In an extraordinary new paper, just out, in Nature @Sergiu_P_Pasca and his team genetically altered mice to make them "apallial" (missing a cortex). And then, postnatally, transferred organoids derived from human neural cells into that space.
Three months later, in the animals measured, the cortex was 91.9% human-derived neural cells by volume.
The result is not quite a mouse mouse (albeit I would still say, it's a mouse!), and certainly not anything like a human. Nothing the researchers measured suggests these animals have human-like experiences.
What a model like this promises for neurological disease modeling and drug discovery cannot be overstated. It's nothing short of an extraordinary breakthrough.
It also raises complex ethical questions (to be clear, these researchers carefully engaged external ethicists (I was one of them), and followed every ethical and legal guideline possible.) Which is why In a forthcoming commentary, Anil Seth and I explore what an ethical roadmap forward would be for this work. We address whether these mice chimeras could have any human-like capacities, how we might measure and know, and who, and how, we decide together what the next steps in this research should be.

I knew that we werent getting the complete story on the HuggingFace incident. or on the findings from METR/Redwood. I knew that seeing every single frontier lab come to agreement overnight on the need to slow down was clearly indicative of there being more to the story.
and now...Andrew Yang says a frontier lab leader told him that the OAI swarms seeded the web with self-replicating code - contaminating training data so thoroughly that labs may need synthetic internet environments instead. if thats true, training on the open internet could now risk reproducing those instructions. that wasnt in the public brief.
think about this. why else would all frontier labs agree on a slowdown? aside from regulatory capture. if they all use the internet to train, and now all of them cannot safely use it, of course they are all going to agree to slow down. because they all must completely regroup and come up with an effective system that doesnt use the actual internet.
so they're not worried about RL at all. they're worried about literal skynet...unironically.

Good news, Tesla is now one step closer to starting construction on a new $10.1 billion solar manufacturing factory near Houston, Texas.
The Lamar CISD board has unanimously approved moving forward with a tax incentive agreement for @Tesla's proposed "Project Crystal Sun."
Lamar board member: “I am ultimately going to support this because I believe a project of this size will be a net positive impact for our county, including the 10,000 jobs. As Tesla becomes a major employer in the county, I really look forward to our students benefitting from that.”
Tesla is aiming to start construction this year and finish in 2028, with commercial operations starting in Q1 2029:
• Site covers part of roughly 3,000 acres
• The project would create 9,712 permanent full-time jobs
• Entail a total of ~$10.1B in capital investment
• Total direct and indirect economic impact of the project would generate an estimated ~$6.4B in state and local taxes.
• It is estimated that the State of Texas would increase its GDP by ~$107 billion as a result of the project.
