40 years ago tonight, Cliff Burton played his final show with Metallica.
It was September 26, 1986, at Solnahallen in Stockholm, Sweden, a stop on the Damage, Inc. tour behind "Master of Puppets." The setlist included his bass showcase "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth."
Hours later, early on September 27, the band's tour bus crashed near Ljungby, Sweden. Cliff was killed. He was 24.
Forty years on, he is still the bassist so many picked up the instrument for.

The new treatment literally grows new neural connections in the brain.
Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have developed a groundbreaking molecule that delivers the powerful brain-repairing benefits of LSD — without any hallucinations.
By simply swapping two atoms in the LSD structure (what lead researcher David E. Olson playfully called a molecular “tire rotation”), the team created JRT — a non-hallucinogenic “neuroplastogen.”
This innovative compound keeps LSD’s remarkable ability to stimulate neuronal growth and repair damaged synapses, while eliminating the psychedelic effects that make traditional LSD too risky for many patients.
The results are impressive: in preclinical studies, JRT increased dendritic spine density by 46% and was nearly 100 times more potent than ketamine as an antidepressant. Crucially, it avoided the gene expression patterns and behaviors linked to psychosis.
This could be a game-changer for psychiatric care — especially for people with schizophrenia and other conditions involving synaptic loss and brain atrophy, who were previously excluded from psychedelic-based therapies.

Metallica’s new multimillion-dollar foundation funds trade school across the U.S.
It has let tens of thousands of people gain skills without crushing debt.
Metallica is famous for heavy metal. For several years the band has also been quietly financing training. Through its nonprofit, All Within My Hands, it has committed more than $17 million to trade programs in the United States.
A 2019 pilot at ten community colleges grew into the Metallica Scholars Initiative.
By mid-2026 the program reached students at 93 community colleges in all 50 states and Guam. It has helped tens of thousands of people learn high-demand trades without taking on debt.
The money supports hands-on programs such as welding, advanced manufacturing, health care, automotive repair, and firefighting. Besides tuition, the foundation pays for safety gear, course materials, and basics such as transportation so students can finish.
Band members, including James Hetfield, have said they take pride in raising the standing of trade work and in careers that can support a family. In 2026 the initiative made its first international grant, in the United Kingdom. The band is as serious about the workforce as it is about the stage.
