HOW GENK BECAME A GOALKEEPING FACTORY🧤🇧🇪 THREAD👇
Genk’s reputation for developing elite goalkeepers is no coincidence. Much of the club’s philosophy can be traced back to Guy Martens and his concept of the ‘3D goalkeeper’, a modern approach that goes far beyond simply stopping shots.
The idea is to develop goalkeepers who can defend space beyond their penalty area, read danger before it develops and play an active role in their team’s build-up. Rather than waiting for these qualities to emerge at the highest level, Genk have made them a fundamental part of their goalkeeper development from an early age.
From Thibaut Courtois and Koen Casteels to Maarten Vandevoordt, Mike Penders and Luca Brughmans, the Belgian club’s track record speaks for itself. 👏

Mike Penders’ impressive development at Genk earned him a move to Chelsea. 🧤🔵
He made his professional debut for Jong Genk at 16 before progressing to the senior team and making his Belgian top-flight debut at 18. Chelsea agreed to sign him in 2024, and he joined the Premier League club in summer 2025.
After rising through Genk’s goalkeeping ranks, Penders made his Premier League debut for Chelsea against Everton this past weekend.

Lucca Brughmans is one of Belgium’s most promising young goalkeepers. 🧤🇧🇪
Luca Brughmans’ development at Genk has attracted interest from one of English football’s biggest clubs. 🧤🔴
He joined Genk from PSV Eindhoven in 2022, began training with the first team at 15 and made his Jong Genk debut at 16. His progress attracted interest from abroad, and Liverpool secured his signing in 2026.
Brughmans is spending the 2026/27 season on loan at Genk, continuing to gain experience before his planned move to Anfield. 👏

Filip Stanković was the hero as Venezia secured a historic win over Napoli 🦸♂️🧤
The 24-year-old Serbian goalkeeper was named Man of the Match after helping his side claim their first Serie A victory of the season in Matchweek 7, ending a run of six consecutive defeats.
Venezia secured a 1-0 victory, with Stanković keeping a clean sheet after making an incredible nine saves, including a penalty stop against Kevin De Bruyne, to cap off his memorable performance 💪🧤
It was also a historic moment for the club, who beat Napoli in Serie A for the first time in their history 👏
What a performance from the Venezia shot-stopper! Have you seen Stanković’s heroics? 👀

EMILIANO MARTÍNEZ: LATEST INJURY UPDATE
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez remains in hospital following a serious head injury sustained in the 2-0 win over Everton.
Manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that the Argentine suffered a concussion after colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite, while further reports suggest a possible jaw fracture that could require surgery.
His CT scans have reportedly shown reassuring results, but Martínez remains under medical observation as further assessments continue.
If surgery is required, his recovery time will depend on the final diagnosis and the extent of the injury. Any expected period of rest or return-to-play timeline remains unconfirmed.
Chelsea are yet to issue a full official medical update. More details are expected once the club confirms the extent of the injury.
Wishing Emi a full and speedy recovery. 🧤
RECORDS ON THE LINE 🧤
Third vs first. 19 points vs 24.
Real Betis are enjoying their best start to a LaLiga season in 92 years, sitting third after eight games with six wins, one draw and one defeat 🤜🏽🤛🏽
Now comes Barcelona.
The league leaders are still unbeaten, with eight wins from eight. A ninth consecutive victory would see Barça match Real Madrid’s historic record of nine straight wins to start a LaLiga season, set in 1968/69 👏🏽
And with so much at stake, the last line could prove decisive.
Álvaro Vallés has the task of standing between Barcelona and history, while Joan García faces a Betis side looking to protect one of the best starts in the club’s history. 😮💨🤝
Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, 21, makes his Premier League debut for Chelsea, becoming the youngest goalkeeper in the club’s history to feature in the competition. 🔵
He came on following Emiliano Martínez’s injury.
Concern for Emiliano Martínez 🚨
The Chelsea goalkeeper was stretchered off following a heavy head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to claim a set-piece.
After several minutes of treatment on the pitch, Martínez was taken to hospital for further assessment.
Wishing Dibu a full and speedy recovery. 🙏
