Is seafood being left out of conversations about #foodsystems in the UK? And what role could it play in transforming our food systems for the better? Our new working paper with @mcsuk unpacks challenges, opportunities & tensions - and invites others to join the conversation 🐟
A new IIED working paper written in collaboration with @mcsuk aims to prompt a conversation about the role of #seafood in transforming UK food systems, and raise the profile of seafood within policy, research and advocacy on the future of #FoodSystems in the UK.

Journalists are meant to speak truth to power. That's our job. But what do you do when that power is your own news org?
This thread (professional suicide note?) is about @guardian & @ObserverUK's future. Because it turns out you can’t believe everything you read on a poster..

This is a bombshell article by @DropSiteNews: dropsitenews.com/p/blinken-a…
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken personally gave his approval to a Israeli policy of bombing humanitarian aid convoys if Israel suspected they would "reach Hamas". The very policy that led to the killing of so many humanitarian aid workers - including those of World Central Kitchen - and resulted in mass starvation in Gaza.

Instead of scapegoating minorities and emboldening the far-right, politicians need to offer real solutions to the injustices that blight our society.

Why does the UK export most of its #seafood? Why do we struggle to get seafood into UK diets? In our working paper with @mcsuk, we argue that bringing seafood into debates about #foodsystems transformation could help tackle some of these knotty questions. iied.org/22301iied

There is a huge amount to unpack still, but bringing #seafood into food system debates is an opportunity for different sectors & parts of the food system to learn from one another.

Harmful subsidies reduce effectiveness of fish poo as a carbon sink --> iied.org/harmful-subsidies-r…
Harmful #FisheriesSubsidies are hampering ocean ecosystems’ ability to capture & store carbon, suggests new analysis by IIED & @FisheryEconomic. #MC13 #StopFundingOverfishing

ALT “It makes sense for people and the planet to redirect the billions spent on harmful subsidies towards positive actions, such as managing fisheries sustainably and supporting coastal communities which rely on the sea for survival. That would begin to rebuild the ocean’s capacity for absorbing and storing carbon as well as safeguarding fish stocks to feed future generations.”
