A historic partnership for birds and people. ✨🤝
The @WorldBank and BirdLife International have joined forces to scale up conservation across the African-Eurasian Flyway, one of the planet’s great migratory routes, connecting Africa, Europe and Asia. 🌍
Stretching from the Arctic tundra to southern Africa, this flyway supports more than 2 billion migratory birds. 🐦 Along the route, critical sites, such as Lake Natron, provide important nesting and feeding grounds, as well as economic and cultural value to countless communities.
BirdLife International is uniquely positioned to ensure the long-term success and impact of this initiative, as CEO Martin Harper states, “In the African-Eurasian Flyway, we’ve built a strategic network of more than 50 national partners implementing integrated conservation measures for nature, birds and people.” 🌿
And the World Bank’s Juergen Voegele adds, “…with the right design, infrastructure investments can be made both efficient and reliable, as well as bird-friendly. These win-win options are at the core of the African-Eurasian Flyway Initiative. Working with BirdLife and our clients, the Bank will support development that is good for both people and nature.”
This new partnership will mirror the work of BirdLife’s Global Flyways programme and initiatives, which drive the conservation and restoration needed to ensure the flourishing of life across the world’s vital migratory pathways. 💙

Meet the enchanting Arabian Sunbird! 🌞🐦
With its iridescent plumage that glows in shades of blue, green, and purple, this energetic bird flits through the gardens, oases, and acacia woodlands of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman in search of nectar. 🌿🌺
Despite its delicate appearance, the Arabian Sunbird is a fierce defender of its territory, often seen chasing away much larger intruders. Males put on mesmerising displays during the breeding season, flashing their metallic feathers to attract mates. ✨💙
Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, the Arabian Sunbird currently has a stable population, flourishing across its range. 🌏

Birds-of-paradise are even more extraordinary than we thought! ✨
Renowned for their dazzling plumage, researchers have now discovered that many of these birds are biofluorescent! 🔬💚
Their feathers and other body parts absorb UV or blue light and emit it at lower frequencies, enriching their colours in ways beyond human perception.
This process likely enhances their elaborate courtship displays 💃🕺, making these performances even more mesmerising to potential mates.

Unsurprisingly when they finally returned to an area with phone service the messages poured in. Ramsdell talked to us on his way home from Yellowstone, sharing how a day that began with wildlife spotting can end up with the Nobel Prize.
