Countdown to the Airbus A350F First Flight: Why This Freighter Needs a Full Flight-Test Campaign One would assume that the Airbus A350F, being derived from the A350-1000, would require only limited additional flight testing. But the A350F is a different aircraft configuration — and Airbus is treating it accordingly. As Laurent explains: “It’s not an A350-1000 and it’s not an A350-900, but rather it’s between both.” The A350F combines an A350-900-length forward fuselage with an A350-1000 rear fuselage and A350-1000 wings. This unique combination creates a new aerodynamic model, with implications for flight controls, handling qualities and overall aircraft behaviour. The redesigned landing gear also brings new ground-manoeuvring characteristics. That is why Airbus is taking the A350F into the development simulator before embarking on an approximately 400-flight-hour flight-test campaign. 🧪 The certification campaign is planned to last around nine months, using two complementary test aircraft: 🔹 MSN700 Focused on: • Aerodynamic performance • Handling qualities • Autopilot systems • Flight-control law clearance MSN700 is also fitted with a specialised tail skid and bumper to protect the aircraft during takeoff-performance testing. 🔹 MSN701 Focused on: • Aircraft systems • Air-conditioning testing • Fire and smoke testing • Hot- and cold-weather testing Once the flight-control laws are cleared, MSN701 can support the broader systems campaign, while MSN700 will ultimately be able to conduct testing with real cargo on board. The A350F may share a tremendous amount of DNA with the A350 family, but its unique dimensions, systems and mission make it a new aircraft configuration that must be understood and certified as a complete system.
