The greatest danger to human civilization and the planet is the inability to believe that tomorrow can be different — the idea that we are individually powerless in the face of colliding existential threats.

78 years later, the impacts from the Trinity Test continue to be felt, even though downwinders from New Mexico have yet to receive compensation.
But that could change. RECA passed in the Senate, and now it needs to pass in the House.

⚠️ Tactical nuclear weapons—those "smaller" bombs ostensibly meant for battlefield use—sharply increase risk of civilization-ending nuclear war.
In a new report, Nolan Center authors illustrate the history of this threat—and ways to bring it to an end.

This is EXACTLY @globalzero’s position: The use of nuclear weapons poses an existential threat to humanity, and the existence of nuclear weapons disproportionately harms marginalized communities. Morally bankrupt + huge mistake (in terms of building power) to pretend otherwise.
Both things can be true. @sapinker @derekjGZ
-Past harms from nuclear testing and development disproportionally hurt people of color.
-If nuclear weapons are used again everyone will suffer.
Tom Lehrer was right: we are all in this together.

Global tensions and growing nuclear arsenals increase the risk of tragic mistakes. To ensure a safer future, we must eliminate nuclear weapons. Disarmament is the way to prevent disasters and promote world peace.
"With international tensions rising along with nuclear arsenals, the corresponding risk[s] that mistakes or misunderstandings lead to disaster are increasing." @washingtonpost
To eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons, we have to eliminate the weapons.
