Nansi Williams - the heroic dinner lady who died saving the lives of schoolchildren during the Aberfan disaster... On October 21, 1966, a Welsh school dinner lady Nansi Williams threw herself over five children as a wall of coal waste crashed into their school. All five survived. She did not. That morning, children at Pantglas Junior School in Aberfan, Wales, were preparing for their final day before the half-term holiday. Nansi, a local woman who worked in the school dining hall, was collecting dinner money from pupils. Above the village stood enormous mountains of waste from the nearby coal mine. For years, residents had lived beneath them, despite concerns about their stability. At approximately 9:15 a.m., one of those mountains collapsed. Around 150,000 tonnes of coal waste and water surged down the hillside, smashing into houses and engulfing the school. Inside, Nansi saw the danger approaching. She ordered five children to get down, then threw herself over them, using her own body as a shield. The impact killed her. One of the children, Karen Thomas, later recalled how Nansi had jumped on top of them as glass shattered and the wall collapsed. The children initially did not understand that she was dead. They tried pulling her hair to wake her. When rescuers recovered Nansi's body, accounts say she was still clutching a pound note collected for school dinners. The Aberfan disaster killed 144 people, including 116 children. An official inquiry later placed responsibility squarely on the National Coal Board. The catastrophe had been preventable. Nansi had no children of her own. In her final moments, she saved five who belonged to other families. For decades, her extraordinary sacrifice received little recognition beyond the community that remembered her. Now, approaching the disaster's 60th anniversary in October 2026, a campaign to honor her has succeeded. A commemorative Purple Plaque is scheduled to be unveiled in Aberfan on October 30. Five children went home because Nansi Williams never did. #archaeohistories

What a remarkable encounter and conversation.
An unexpected encounter in Kensington Gardens reveals something tragic. This stranger's honesty and vulnerability shocked me. Truly heartbreaking.

๐ŸŽ‰ NUTMEGโ€™S FREEDOM RIDE ๐ŸŽ‰ Nutmeg was one of the most overlooked dogs at the shelter, and she became one of the longest residents. Her family had tearfully surrendered her. Alice whose body is covered in scars arrived the same day as nervous Paddy and brave survivor Brian. They formed a little family helping each other. We cleared the park while they explored initially, then fed dogs back in one by one so they didnโ€™t get overwhelmed. Itโ€™s never one size fits all for arrivals. We work with what we see in front of us and try to make it a positive experience. But more than that this video is about dogs helping dogs - the foundation of our beautiful little rescue ๐Ÿ’œ

We spend an enormous amount of time talking about the very worst of us, so let's remember some of the best. This is Dr Karmele Llano Sanchez, a Spanish veterinarian rescuing orangutans from the wildfires in West Kalimantan. No AC or mod cons for wildlife rescuers and veterinarians working in the most challenging conditions in the field, often facing real danger with great courage. Eight orangutans have recently been treated and released, but the suffering witnessed has taken its toll on her team. Most people don't even know her nameโ€”she couldn't care less about thatโ€”but I do. People like her are true heroes, and we should know who they are.

Five years ago today, Sir David Amess was killed while serving the people of Southend West. I knew David as a kind, tireless colleague who dedicated his life to public service. His death was a terrible reminder of the risks faced by those in public life, and of our responsibility to ensure that everyone can serve their communities without fear. Today, we remember Davidโ€™s extraordinary commitment to the people he represented, and the lasting loss felt by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Vince was so itchy he had made himself bleed from biting at himself. As you can see, with treatment he's now flea free and his coat is starting to look really good. He is unchipped, so no age on him but I would say 5+ but not old. Vince doesn't seem to have any dog issues from what we have seen. Vince is very vocal in kennels, to the point where he is making himself cough. We thought initially he had KC so he's been isolated for 3 weeks on treatment, no other dogs have come down with it so we think he is giving himself a sore throat from barking and it isn't KC. He needs to be taught some manners and that if he's quiet he will get a reward (he's food and treat orientated), and if he shouts he gets nothing. He was picking this up pretty quickly with me this morning, so he seems quite smart and trainable. Clean in his kennel and loves his food x In UK dog pound but transport can be arranged. BREAKING: The Vatican reveals that Pope Leo XIV has lung cancer and had the lower lobe of his right lung removed in a successful surgery. We want to offer our best wishes to the head of the Catholic Church, who has proven to be a consistent ray of light and love in these dark fascist times. โ€œThe Holy Father underwent thoracic surgery as scheduled. To ensure the radical removal of the tumor, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique. An intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected from preoperative tests,โ€ the Holy See Press Office stated. โ€œThe Holy Father was in the operating room for approximately three hours, while the procedure itself lasted about 90 minutes,โ€ the statement continued. โ€œThe operation was successful, and there were no complications. After surgery, the pope regained consciousness normally and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the 10th floor.โ€ The Vatican has canceled all Leo's planned audiences up through October 20. It's as yet unclear if he will still make his trip to South America next month. If you're a person of faith, please offer up a prayer for the pontiff. If you're an atheist who supports the pope, share your well wishes below. We can help drown out the bloodthirsty MAGA supporters who are flooding social media with celebratory posts about Leo's diagnosis. We need this man to stick around for a long, long time! Please like and share to wish Pope Leo a speedy recovery!
