Overheard in the Vancouver Law Courts barristers’ lounge yesterday: Counsel A: You must think I’m the most unreasonable lawyer in town. Counsel B: No no. You’ve got instructions. I get it. #civility

Terrible work by @globeandmail and @CanadianPress here. McLachlin’s statement says she has confidence in the judges of the HK Court of Final Appeal, not the “system” generally. And she certainly does not say she has “faith in democracy in the territory”. Totally misleading.

Reading this today, I think of the decades of work by Indigenous peoples campaigning for an international declaration of their rights, and the years of further work to achieve recognition of the UNDRIP in BC and federal law. Much more work lays ahead. But…
The Court has dismissed the AGQ’s appeal and allowed the AGC’s appeal in Reference re An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families. It ruled that the federal act was constitutional. Read our plain-language summary here: scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/cb/2…

…what has been achieved today is truly remarkable. One day someone will write a history of the UNDRIP and the efforts of Indigenous peoples from this country will feature very prominently.
