A “Why IB?” answer fails when it sounds written. The test isn't elegance; it's whether you can say it under interruption, defend each claim, and connect the group to work you've actually studied. If your story collapses after one follow-up, it was a script—not motivation.
Fit questions aren't the soft half of an IB interview. They're a staffing-risk test. “Why this group?” checks research. “Tell me about a conflict” checks whether you'll create friction at 2 a.m. Technicals prove you can do the task; fit proves people will trust you with it.
Banking seniority is a compression ladder: Analyst: update the numbers. Associate: make it client-ready. VP: decide what changes the answer. MD: decide whether the mandate is worth chasing. Promotion is less about escaping Excel than owning a larger judgment call.
If AI compresses analyst production, interviews should move from “can you build it?” to “can you audit it?” Hide a broken circularity, unsupported synergy, or impossible debt paydown in the model. Judgment shows up in what the candidate catches.
if an interviewer changes one assumption and you restart the whole answer, you memorized the model.
follow the change:
revenue → EBITDA → cash flow → debt paydown → equity value.
the chain is the answer.
a good LBO answer isn’t “more debt = higher returns.”
it’s: debt reduces the equity check, but only if cash flow survives the interest burden and your exit assumptions don’t do the work.
if your merger model shows EPS accretion, ask what bought it.
cheap debt, aggressive synergies, or a low-P/E target can produce the same headline with very different risk.
if revenue grows 20% and EBITDA grows 10%, don’t call it operating leverage.
the model is telling you margins compressed.
everyone memorizes EV = equity value + debt − cash.
the MD’s next question: when isn’t the cash actually excess?
BofA’s London 2027 IB deadline is October 11.
the line that matters: assessments often start before it.

recruiting season started before the semester.

the $17B headline isn’t the interesting part.
the 14.5x multiple uses the $16.7B net price and all $395M of expected EBITDA synergies.

Investment banking is explaining that valuation is an art, then fighting over whether the multiple should be 11.2x or 11.3x.
Interview question: Why do equal-EBITDA companies trade at different EV/EBITDA multiples?
A strong answer covers growth, margins, recurring revenue, capital intensity, cyclicality, concentration and earnings quality.
The multiple is the output. Business quality drives it.
