Should offers like this be allowed in 2026 in one of the world’s leading economies?
22¢/mile
$3.75/hr before costs/expenses
Your answer to that question also answers whether you believe a major grocery chain and a multi-billion dollar app platform should be allowed to exploit human labor in this manner.
(Offer received just after 9pm on a Friday night in a busy Boston suburb at a very busy time.)
Agreed
The driver take should be 75-80% of the fare.
They’re using their vehicle, fuel, maintenance, insurance, car washes, etc., and assuming all risk. And ofc their most valuable asset, their time.
Uber and Lyft are not running efficiently.
Their cut, as middleman and matchmaker should be capped.
If they can’t operate within that margin, then either their costs are too high or they’re not charging enough.
Because what’s happening now looks like exploitation. They are taking advantage of workers who don’t understand the true costs or risks.
And while Uber and LYFT are taking way too much, drivers have some responsibilities to know their numbers too. If your cost per mile is too high, gig work may not be for you.
Many drivers don’t realize they are literally PAYING TO WORK on the platforms.
As @sergioaved puts it, they’re using their car as an ATM.
They’re essentially taking a payday loan from the car’s value and accelerating the depreciation.
Many drivers also have no idea they’re on the hook for a ludicrous $2,500 deductible in the event of an accident.
Or that they MAY NOT EVEN BE COVERED depending on what “period” they’re in or if they have the proper “rideshare endorsement”on their policy.
If drivers understood this, many would likely stop working the apps and the market would have to adjust accordingly.

If Uber engineers and C-suite types actually use the driver app to any meaningful extent, they would know that this is entirely useless and misguided.
Decent drivers don’t have their phone audio blasting through the sound system, or even in the vehicle at all. All phone audio goes into the AirPod in my left ear.
Play the message on the passenger’s device if you want them to hear it.

Fun fact, there’s a Black Female owned ride share company called @getheride
based in Atlanta that’s been tackling this very issue since 2020. Coincidence? 🤔
Uber's trying a new safety lever: choice.
The ride-hailing giant is rolling out a "Women Drivers" option nationwide, letting female riders request to be matched with female drivers.
They can either set a preference in the app or when reserving a ride in advance.
The feature allows pilots in 20+ US cities and comes as Uber faces thousands of sexual assault complaints tied to rides.
A recent Arizona case ended with a jury ordering Uber to pay $8.5M in damages after a passenger said she was raped by her driver in 2023.
But supply could be a bottleneck.
Only ~20% of US Uber drivers are women, and in places like NYC, 94% of ride-hail drivers are male.
So riders who opt for a female driver could be waiting awhile.
Uber's betting that more control = more trust, even if the math makes perfect matches hard to guarantee...
