I loved this trailer when it came out and have returned to it many times. It and the film powerfully displayed the toll of being human. And Johnny Cash makes everything better (go rewatch the True Grit trailer).
LOGAN (2017) began taking shape after THE WOLVERINE, when Hugh Jackman and James Mangold started discussing how to give the character a proper farewell after years of playing him. Inspired by the OLD MAN LOGAN comics and westerns like SHANE and UNFORGIVEN, Mangold envisioned a darker, more grounded story about an ageing Wolverine whose healing factor was failing. The idea evolved into a road movie about Logan protecting a young mutant, Laura, while caring for a deteriorating Professor X. Jackman pushed to make it his final solo outing, and Fox ultimately allowed Mangold to pursue an R-rated vision that broke away from the usual superhero formula. Set to Johnny Cash’s haunting cover of Hurt, the film became a moving story about mortality, regret and legacy, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and giving one of Marvel’s most enduring characters a genuinely emotional send-off.

The tangle of Eastern European alliances and aggressive expansionism is an essential part of understanding the constraints around French and British foreign policy in the interwar years.

Native American cataphracts lancers
Recreation of an armored Comanche horse from 1700. Raw hide scales with sand glue on provided protection against arrows and melee weapons. It eventually fell out of favor when guns became widely available.

One of my favorite historical stories.
In 1527, a Spanish expedition set out to colonize Florida. But the mission quickly descended into a desperate fight for survival. A LAND SO STRANGE by Andrés Reséndez tells the true story of their survival and the world they encountered along the way. Learn more: hachettebookgroup.com/titles…

Cryptid charismatic microfauna:
In 1937, a new species of water bear called Thermozodium esakii was discovered in Hiroshima, Japan. Water bears are tiny but very tough organisms, indivisible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, the specimen was later lost and more proof of its existence has yet to be discovered

"Postliberals want to develop their own elite to rival the decadent liberal elite and thereby usher in the postliberal order. Vermeule is confident that most Americans do not really know what they want, simply taking what elites give them. Once postliberals take over elite institutions, most Americans will accept postliberalism. This optimism makes sense given that postliberals view all but a few as sheep. Reliance on people’s alleged passivity also suggests, lip service aside, that one isn’t much concerned with the truth of one’s ideology. "How most of us populate the unwashed masses, while these strongmen have perfect wisdom and moral self-governance, is never explained. The authors suggest that Deneen and Vermeule fancy themselves as such leaders. Perhaps this goes too far, but even if key postliberals are more modest about their own abilities, the mystery remains as to how they would identify the führers who should rule us." A very enjoyable review of @McGillPatterson and @ThomasDHowes book: "Why Postliberalism Failed" for @libertarianism

'If one starts with the “natural” orders of race, nation, and political authority and then applies the classic maxim ["grace does not destroy nature but perfects it"], "grace" will increasingly turn out to mean little more than baptizing what the theologian already thinks nature requires.' Really good book review by @jamesrwoodtheo of "Karl Barth and the Idolatry of the Nation: Confronting Christian Nationalism" for @firstthingsmag

“After half a century of teaching poetry, I have come to believe that I must urge my better students to possess great poems by memory. Choose a poem that *finds* you, as Coleridge says, and read it deeply and often, out loud to yourself, and to others. Internalizing the poems of Shakespeare, Milton, Whitman will teach you to think more comprehensively than Plato can.” Harold Bloom
