In 2025/26, we saw 901 new affordable homes built in Manchester, in 23 out of 32 wards, 439 for social rent, 149 at Manchester Living Rent.
A record year.
1,000s more on site too.
It is @McrLabour and @bevcraig building the homes that Mancunians need. – at Manchester, England
Save the date for Christmas in Withington on Friday 4th December, at 5pm outside the Library with Withington Civic Society - always a great festive evening in the heart of our village in Withington.

The Manchester Evening News is backing a bid to raise £42.5m to build a revolutionary new cancer scanning centre at The Christie.
We are calling on people across Greater Manchester and beyond to help fund the new centre at the world-renowned hospital.
It would dramatically increase the number of patients that can be examined and provide access to some of the most advanced imaging technology available.
At the heart of the plans is a state-of-the-art scanner which will give doctors an unprecedented view of tumours, showing not just where they are but how they move inside the body in real time.
The technology could allow medics to target cancer more precisely, reducing damage to healthy tissue and helping patients receive kinder, more targeted treatment.
For the first time, clinicians will also be able to carry out some surgical procedures while a patient is being scanned, allowing treatment decisions to be made instantly and targeting tumours more accurately than ever before.
The appeal by the hospital's own charity comes after demand for scanning soared. Existing facilities were built in 1980 to treat around 20 patients a day - but it now supports more than 60.
This is the Christie Charity most ambitious appeal yet but every donation will help bring the project closer to reality and give thousands of patients access to faster, more advanced scans each year.

We have built record numbers of affordable housing in the last year – the most completion since the 1990s – and we're building right across the city.
We are also on track to meet our target to build at least 10,000 social rent, affordable and Council homes up to 2032.

Great to see Mellands Park development and new estate completed this week in Longsight ward.
It has 303 homes, including 96 social and affordable homes, with 36 homes for young care leavers with @centrepointuk.🏡
It also has 2 new grass football pitches and a new youth hub too.

Pleased to see progress we are making to see more new social housing built all over Manchester - in all 32 wards including in the city centre too.
2025/26 was a record year and we have a strong pipeline of new social homes being built on site and with planning permission too.🏡

Council estates still suffer from deep-seated negative stereotypes, but a new wave of council housing is embracing innovative, imaginative and attractive design.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham paid tribute to councillor Pat Karney, following his sad death at the age of 78.
Mr Karney, a councillor for Harpurhey, served the city for almost half a century with pride, humour and commitment.
The PM told MPs: "Thank you, Pat, for your contribution to Manchester and to politics in our country".

I’m deeply saddened to hear that Pat Karney has died.
Pat gave nearly 50 years of his life to serving Manchester. He saw the city through some of its toughest times and played his part in the growth and transformation that followed.
I knew Pat for many years. He loved Manchester deeply and was a tireless champion for the people he represented.
I’ll miss him greatly. My thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew and loved him.
This is very sad news.
He will be missed and his passing is a real loss.
Pat was such a champion of our city, and always spoke up for all mancunians.
He understood the deep roots and history of our city, but was also a pioneer for the growth of Manchester and our future too.💔

I don't care what anyone says, I believe we can end rough sleeping in Britain.
Today is World Homeless Day, and I don't think anyone in this country should be sleeping rough on our streets. Certainly not tonight.
That's why one of the first commitments I made as Prime Minister was to end rough sleeping. Not manage it. Not reduce it. End it.
And I'm putting over £400 million behind a national drive to get everyone in for Christmas.
And to put my own money where my mouth is, I'm making my latest salary donation from my PM salary to The Passage in Victoria, an amazing charity I visited on my very first day in Downing Street.
All this will help make sure that every person sleeping rough is offered a route off the street and a safe place to stay because, in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, people should not be left to sleep outside with nowhere to turn.
This isn't the finish line. We'll keep building the homes, creating the jobs, and reforming the services to stop people reaching crisis point in the first place.
But today, I wanted to say this: we should never accept rough sleeping as normal. Not in Britain, not in 2026, and not while I'm Prime Minister.

Irrespective of tenure, all renters have the right to live in a safe and decent home and have complaints responded to in a timely manner.
Awaab’s Law is already helping to drive up standards in the social housing sector.
We’re now moving to extend it to private landlords so that England’s 11 million private renters can enjoy the same protections.

Brilliant to attend the opening of 50 new social rent homes in Chorlton on the former baths site.🏡
Built in partnership with @MSVHousing, these homes for local older people built to HAPPI design principles are a wonderful addition and investment in the local district centre.🌳
Great to have the strong and consistent support of the @ChorltonLabour councillors along with @JeffSmithetc for this fantastic new social housing in the heart of Chorlton.🏡🌹
