It’s not just home care.
Care England says every council-funded care home place in England is £10,000+ a year short. Nursing beds: £23,000+.
The gap hit £2.36bn in 2025/26. Up 49% since 2022/23.
Providers can’t absorb that forever.
Councils in England pay £25.37 an hour for home care.
But the minimum to deliver it is £34.42.
That’s a £9 an hour hole.
Not one of the 176 council contracts across 107 councils pay the minimum.
British founders don't lack entrepreneurial spirit. They do lack access to cheap risk capital compared to the US. But the biggest obstacle is the anti-business mentality of rule makers.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang warns that Britain lacks entrepreneurial spirit, despite having world-class talent, universities and technology.
He argues that UK founders overthink risks and focus too much on failure instead of finding reasons to succeed.
“If there was a million ways to win, you find the one reason not to do it.”
The moment you sell your company to PE and stop making the decisions, it's no longer your call. Shouldn't come as a surprise. There are other ways to structure a deal to give the owners and the staff what they want. Otherwise, you get the cash and the buyer gets the say.
My friend’s dad built a business from nothing. 30 years. Blood and sweat. Turned it into something worth $2,000,000.
Sold it in 2019 to a private equity firm.
They gutted it in 18 months. Cut 40 jobs. Raised prices 35%. Eliminated the pension plan he’d built for his employees. Squeezed every dollar out and sold the carcass.
He calls it the worst decision he ever made. Said he thought they’d protect what he built.
Private equity doesn’t buy businesses to run them. They buy them to harvest them. And they’re doing it to every industry you depend on daily.

EOTs are now subject to CGT — dropping from 100% relief to 50%.
Let’s be honest: most of the appeal was tax efficiency, and even before this change EOTs had clear drawbacks.
Business owners wanting higher valuations and flexible exits have far better options today.

Yes, big economies of scale — but the real prize is the digital subscription upside.
