I’ve never personally met Katie Zachariah, but I’ve followed her work and appreciated her efforts to support President Trump and his administration. I was genuinely rooting for her and wanted to see her succeed. President Trump needs a press secretary who is not only loyal but talented, prepared, and capable of handling one of the most hostile press environments imaginable. Her exit is unfortunate and, frankly, an unnecessary distraction. A few observations from someone who has spent nearly two decades working in news and politics, both in front of and behind the camera: First, being comfortable on television and commanding a room full of reporters are two completely different animals. On TV, you’re often answering questions in short segments with a host guiding the conversation. Standing alone in front of a room full of people, many of whom are hoping you’ll fail, requires a completely different level of preparation, composure, and confidence. Second, don’t fake it until you make it. There’s nothing wrong with ambition or learning as you go, but you have to be honest about your background and qualifications. Credibility matters, especially when you’re representing the president of the United States. Third, the mainstream media is not your friend. Anyone who has spent five minutes in conservative media should understand that Trump supporters are going to face intense scrutiny, and sometimes outright hostility. You can complain about the unfair treatment, but you also have to be prepared for it. Fourth, know when to stop talking. I think the follow-up interviews were a HUGE mistake. Sometimes the best strategy is to go quiet, regroup, and let the news cycle move on. Repeatedly explaining why you had a bad day only keeps that bad day in the headlines. Her very first press conference offered a perfect example of why message discipline matters. When a Daily Mail reporter asked how she planned to balance family life with her new responsibilities, that was an opportunity to politely shut down a personal question rather than volunteer details about her family’s plans. Something as simple as, “That’s a personal matter between me and my family. I’m here to serve at the pleasure of the president, and my focus is on doing that job to the best of my ability.” That’s it. No rambling, no unnecessary details, and no new material for reporters to run with. And perhaps most importantly, when your job is to represent the president and YOU become the story, you’ve lost control of the message. Here’s what makes this situation particularly unfortunate: I genuinely believe Katie was capable of doing this job. I don’t think she lacked the talent or potential. I think she needed a little more preparation before stepping into such a high-pressure role. And I also believe she could have bounced back from that initial stumble. One bad performance doesn’t have to define someone’s career. But the decisions you make afterward can either help you recover or make the situation exponentially worse. With a little more discipline, a smarter media strategy, and a willingness to step out of the spotlight temporarily, I think this could have played out very differently. Loyalty is important, but so are preparation, good judgment, and knowing when to take a step back. Sometimes it’s not the initial mistake that sinks you. It’s how you handle the aftermath. I wish Katie well. I really do. And I hope this experience doesn’t discourage her from pursuing future opportunities. The best communicators know what to say, how to say it, and perhaps most importantly, when to stop talking.
