Chicagoan. I like public transit, well-protected bike lanes, and wasting time on this silly dumb app.

In the span of six residential blocks, I passed four former corner stores. Cities aren’t supposed to be single-use.

#RankedChoiceVoting benefits candidates and voters because it reduces the costs of elections by eliminating runoffs. Runoffs have lower turnout and cause voter fatigue. It is time to get rid of them and implement #RCV!

You can tell a lot about a society by seeing what is and is not tolerated in the public sphere. In US cities, drivers store their cars on public land indefinitely - for free - but a person sleeping in a tent will be harassed, criminalized, and displaced.

This actually isn’t surprising at all, but it still needs to said over & over — the biggest barrier to more urban biking in cities is the fear of cars. “A study confirms that if we are serious about getting people on bikes, they need a safe place to ride.” treehugger.com/fear-of-cars-…

It’s much easier to blame developers, tech, Airbnb, vacancies or whomever for our housing problems than to focus on solving the actual problem: That *we* as a society — through our elected governments over a 50 year period — have made it impossible to build enough housing.
Replying to @PEWilliams_
Despite being in it for years, it’s always surprising how badly people want the housing crisis to be a story about a few immoral bad actors as opposed to one about the utter failure of jurisdictions to adopt basic housing and planning policy.

Every winter, Mother Nature reveals how much we’ve over-designed our streets for cars. If we look carefully, she also inspires us to create healthier and more equitable streets! (via @the_transit_guy & @Streetfilms)

someone on Reddit (@MrPecners) made this population density map of Illinois and I've been staring at it for 15 minutes so maybe you will too: i.redd.it/v0ivdiefpy6a1.png

This sums up chicago bike lanes. ALL of these cars are parked illegally in bike lanes directly in front of not 1 but TWO GHOST BIKES that face each other from opposite sides of Milwaukee at Kilbourn. Every single one of these driver knows they have absolutely nothing to fear.

The main thing that makes it hard to have nature and green in cities isn’t density of buildings or density of people — it's density of cars. And the more well-designed density of people and buildings you have, the fewer cars you can have.

Vox videos are so well made. Always beautiful and informative. This one in particular, the way they project charts onto the built environment is just so so lovely. 👨🏻‍🍳😘👌🏻 youtu.be/0-nthHT-J1k
