I’ve spent the past year on a search. How do we push back against the forces that feel like they are crushing us right now? How do we resist the dehumanization of our politics, our technology? The answers came from people who pushed back before us: the dissidents...🧵

Boris Kochubievsky, one of the first prisoners of Zion, died today. In 1968, Soviet authorities sent him to a mental asylum and then to a labor camp, because he wanted the fact that it was *Jews* who were murdered in Babi Yar to be stated publicly. After US Jews took up his cause, he was released in 1972 and allowed to move to Israel.

The writer S. An-sky set out in 1912 to document the culture of a now-lost Yiddish civilization, @galbeckerman writes. More than a century later, Beckerman explores the thousands of folktales, manuscripts, and sacred objects from An-sky’s expedition: theatlantic.com/magazine/202…

@galbeckerman from Ukraine, tracing never-ending cycles of imperial erasure. one of the best things i have read in a long while@
"There was a terrible feeling of continuity, heading into Ukraine right now for this purpose. An‑sky was desperate to save all that was strange and beautiful about his people; Ukrainians have been dying for four years by the tens of thousands for largely the same reason. They are fighting to preserve their autonomy, which includes the uniqueness of their national and cultural identity—a front line that An‑sky would recognize.
As he began his expedition at the end of June 1912, An‑sky wrote a letter to Gintsburg, his benefactor, in which he felt compelled to spill out his feelings: “I am very nervous, as if standing before the great unknown. How will this all turn out?” Would these villagers regard him as an interloper, or one of their own? “And yet, at the same time, I have a great feeling of joy in my soul, that the most treasured dream of my life is beginning to come to fruition.”
...“With every old man who dies, with every small-town fire, with every exile, a piece of our past is lost, and the most beautiful expressions of traditional life, with its customs, traditions, and beliefs, disappear,” An‑sky wrote in the foreword to his questionnaire. When I mentioned this parallel to her, @ukr_arthistory stopped walking and looked at me intensely. “When I was young, it shocked me whenever I thought about the Jews who once lived here,” she said. “The idea that a whole people could just disappear. Could a people just disappear?”

I learned of an expedition in the 1910s that recorded the songs and stories and folklore of the shtetl world. Earlier this year, I went to Ukraine to look for its endangered remnants. This, in @TheAtlantic's November issue, was a special one for me.

Beautiful and touching article about the heritage of the disappeared culture of Jewish shtetls, preserved in An-sky's archives in Kyiv. I became a tiny, tiny part of the article too. Thank you @galbeckerman

"9/11 and October 7 have become universal shorthand because of the concentrated, spectacular violence that took place on those days—the sense of total rupture. Both marked the beginning of a new reality, leading to years of compounding death & destruction"

Adam Kirsch's stunningly thoughtful article considers the question of the moment. What is Zionism? Here's one thing it's not: "'supporting whatever actions Israel takes.' If that definition were accurate, even the president of Israel couldn’t be considered a Zionist." @TheAtlantic
