bookmark this post for when ontology becomes the hot buzzword in 3 months
the smartest engineers I know who use AI to build software at scale are all thinking about ontologies we're now building 10000x faster but systems are not 10000x more correct. When you have probabilistic models touching your system in a world where code is generated at a much faster rate than humans can (or care to) check, you stop knowing whether your system is correct. Some people's answer is human review, some people say its formal verification, and some people say the answer is actually one level down at the ontology layer: a shared, formal understanding of what things mean in your world that enforces what’s allowed to be true. more writing on this soon but if you have thoughts on this lets yap

Sovereign Ontology <3
the future of enterprise ai is a sovereign ontology, deployed on prem, that grows into the last & final system of record for every company one final git-backed folder called <my-company.exe> your entire enterprise as code

Ontologies everywhere
I just KILLED Palantir! Foundry lets you build your own company ontology. It uses @helixdb for the s3-backed ontology and @duckdb for transforming and analysing the data. It's open source so check it out: github.com/HelixDB/helix-fou…

(lisp forever)
everyone will converge to writing a strongly typed lisp with a repl. forma-lang.com/

to all the FDEs and more broadly software engineers: I think everyone agrees that vibecoded software by non engineers is still far away from production grade for use at any meaningful scale, but why do you think that is? What concretely is the gap that exists in a world where code generation is good and cheap & there are business-savvy people?

Determinism still matters
Replying to @nikitabier
I think people who don’t know what deterministic means today will know in the next 18 months and demand it. We’re all going to look back on right now and laugh at how foolish it was to try to use LLM for everything. It will be like how we chuckle at Mongo now.

How much of modern management theory is actually fossilized enterprise software? Pipelines, workflows, tickets, stages, approvals, dashboards, OKR machinery, org structures. Software encoded a model of the company. Companies absorbed it. Then managers carried that model into the next company.

on ai-native systems as systems take on better abilities to (machine) learn about their users and environments, we’ll see a shift from static to more dynamic products recommendations, computer vision etc as ml techniques have been embedded as part of the app layer for a decade+ now but what about the rest of the stack? what will generative ai-native browsers, operating systems, networks etc look like that are more adaptive and incentive aligned to the user’s short and long term preferences

Why do pilots use checklists? Because anything that can be made deterministic, should be made deterministic.
