Over the last 20 seasons, teams with the ball and the lead in the final 10 seconds of a college football game were 1,046-1. One thousand and forty six wins. One loss. Today NC State became number two. Here is how it happened, and it is genuinely hard to believe. NC State led Vanderbilt 31-28 with six seconds left. They intercepted Jared Curtis at their own 2 yard line. Game over. Everybody in the building knew it. A 1,046-1 situation. Dave Doeren did not want to snap the ball and punt from his own end zone, which is fair, because that is how you get a punt blocked and lose a game. So he went with the safest play in football. Take an intentional safety. Here is the math on that. A safety is worth two points. NC State leads by three. Give up the two, and you win 31-30. You still win. By one. With almost no time left. All quarterback CJ Bailey had to do was go down in his own end zone. That is it. Kneel. Take the two. Go home 2-1. Instead he tried to burn another second or two off the clock before he went down. Stay upright a beat longer, bleed the remaining time, make sure Vanderbilt gets nothing at all. And Vanderbilt edge rusher Miles Capers came flying in and knocked the ball loose. Cornerback Cayden Daniels fell on it. In the end zone. That is not a safety. That is a touchdown. Two points became six. 31-28 became 34-31. The extra point made it 35-31. Vanderbilt won a game they had no business being in. And look at what the rest of that game looked like. Vanderbilt trailed 17-0. They were down 31-21 with under 10 minutes to play. They committed 13 penalties for 116 yards. They turned it over three times. NC State outgained them 446 to 409 and held the ball for nearly 36 minutes to Vanderbilt's 24. Vanderbilt lost almost every category on the stat sheet and won the game on the last play from the one spot on the field where a mistake costs you six instead of two. Now, about that one other loss. October 17, 2015. Number 7 Michigan State at number 12 Michigan. Michigan leading, clock about to hit zero, punting it away to end it. The snap got bobbled. Jalen Watts-Jackson picked it up and ran 38 yards as time expired. Michigan State 27, Michigan 23. That is the game that gave the internet the Surrender Cobra, the shot of a Michigan fan with his hands behind his head in total disbelief. Eleven years. Over a thousand games. Two losses. Today was one of them. One last thing, because it needs saying. CJ Bailey is a college kid who was trying to close out a win on the road. He was not showboating. He was trying to squeeze one more second off a clock so his team would be completely safe. That instinct is what got him. One extra beat on his feet. The margin between a safety and a touchdown was about a second and a half. Vanderbilt is 3-0 and heads to Auburn next Saturday. Baylor football is wearing a six-year-old's artwork on their helmets today. Her name is ILaria Ramirez. She is from Cameron, Texas. She is a patient at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center. Here is how it happened. Baylor players went over to the children's hospital and sat down with the pediatric patients. Not a photo op, not a walk through and wave. They actually sat down at tables with the kids and drew together. Blank Baylor Bear heads. Markers. Make it yours. ILaria made hers pink and teal. She put a bear right in the middle of it. And then she did two things that nobody told her to do. She gave it a name. She called it the Helmet of Hope. And she picked three words to go around the edge of it. FAITH. VICTORY. STRENGTH. A six-year-old chose those. Not a marketing department. Not a coach. Not her parents. Her. Baylor took her drawing, turned it into a decal, and put it on every single helmet for today's Gold Rush game against Louisiana Tech. Not a sticker on one guy's helmet. Not a patch on the sleeve. Every player on the field wearing a first grader's bear on the side of their head. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and gold is the color for it worldwide. Baylor asked the entire stadium to wear gold today. Head coach Dave Aranda on why: "ILaria is one of us, and so we represent her and want her and her family to know that we're fighting along with her." And linebacker Kyler Jordan, on what today actually is: "Way bigger than football." Here is the number that sits underneath all of this. Nearly 1 in 285 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer before they turn 20. One in 285. Before 20 years old. Which means in a stadium that holds 45,000 people, the math says a few hundred of them have already been through some version of what ILaria is going through right now. That is why the gold matters. That is why a helmet decal matters. Somewhere in that building today there is a kid who knows exactly what a hospital room looks like, watching a Division I football team run out of the tunnel wearing a drawing made by a girl who is six. FAITH. VICTORY. STRENGTH. She picked those words herself.
