I love this record but surely it’s a textbook midlife crisis, like throwing in the towel as a stockbroker to live in a campervan and make artisanal cheese
'Nashville Skyline' is the situation when Bob Dylan acts like it's perfectly normal that his new LP is a wildly horny 28-minute Country & Western album wherein he sings like a particularly hash-drunk Dean Martin, and we all agree that it's perfect. Throw my ticket out the window.

Derek Jarman set design! (and terrible carpet chewing performances by those masters of understatement O. Reed and V. Redgrave but you can't have everything)
I was a kid- And I remember this film- released by WB was “excessive, overbearing” etc and, in my country, Mexico- we were told that the Church explicitly considered it blasphemy. And here we are… I LOVE it more than ever- because it is NOT about possession but what the political narrative does with it. Glad WB takes risks- even now…

‘Better’ has to do a lot of work, de gustibus etc but Cocteau Twins Song to the Siren, Clash I Fought the Law, D Bowie I Can’t Explain (coked up version on Pin Ups), ZZ Top I Gotsta Get Paid, Motörhead Train Kept a’Rollin’ to be going on with
Name a song where you think the cover version is better than the original. Some covers become so iconic that many people forget they weren’t the first version of the song.

I would mildly point out that Christian from Clueless is an early proponent of shape ‘n’ drape

In 2016, I got into an argument with a gay man on a menswear forum. I have since made it my mission to make every man dress gay, thereby reducing his ability to tell who is gay and thus reduce his ability to find love. I have built a following of 1.5M followers for this mission.

The Rainbow at school; a dead heat between Roger Scruton's The Philosophy of Architecture and Simon Schama's The Power of Art for work
Unrecommend a book! What is the worst book you ever forced yourself to finish?

No quarrel with either of these ppl but this thing of calling podcasts 'The Rest Is X' was getting pretty rebarbative given it only ever worked when it repurposed an already existing saying (the rest is history) - this one evokes Hamlet's dying words wch isn't exactly upbeat

I've just seen the word 'foopball' in Down Wiv Skool and wondered if it inspired K Amis to have the appalling Roy say things like 'tim peaches' in Girl, 20 (I think M Amis does something similar in Lionel Asbo)

Leaving aside questions, legitimate or otherwise, about RC's profundity, bogus or otherwise, and her prose style, leaden or otherwise, the real problem has always seemed to me that she's clearly just a really awful person
FROM THE ARCHIVE: RACHEL CUSK ON THE TROUBLE WITH MEN I certainly wasn’t going to waste any time feeling sorry for men. They don’t relax, it seems, except when there are things to be done around the house. Also, they have failed to find favour with the hormone fairy who creeps into their rooms while they sleep and silts up their arteries. This is a biological disposition. It’s the same thing that some men talk about when they say, “We’re biologically disposed to be polygamous. We are!” Read Rachel Cusk, in 1996: newstatesman.com/archive/202…

Apropos of which it’s easy to take Chris Ridell’s brillliant cover illustrations for granted but this one of Anita Brookner is just fantastic I think, vivid & incisive

Some of these cd do with an editor, though there’s something urgent & compelling about that too, but the cocktail of thinking + compelling writing + some sort of genuine attempt to get to grips with the sheer where-we-areness of it all is (a) rare and (b) refreshing (and b bcs a)
Count Binface took 27 per cent of the vote. Nigel Farage took back Clacton. In a Norman church in Sussex, Will Self encountered the modern stab-in-the-back myth. It was wearing beige trousers.
