What do the Ford government's cuts actually look like?
Toronto Life lays it out across the TDSB:
✂️ 175 teaching positions cut from low-income schools
✂️ 40 vice-principal positions eliminated
✂️ 218 central positions cut
✂️ Nine school cafeterias closed
✂️ Programming cut at five outdoor education centres
✂️ Nearly 800 jobs eliminated overall
And at one school featured in the investigation, the student population has doubled over roughly 20 years while the number of social workers, child and youth workers and teacher assistants has been cut in half.
This is what “finding efficiencies” looks like in practice: fewer adults, fewer supports, and more pressure on classrooms already stretched thin.
And this isn’t just a Toronto story.
Across Ontario, school boards are facing staffing shortages, cuts to student supports, and growing pressure to do more with less.
When supports disappear, every student feels it.

Here at 705 Progress Avenue, we see opportunity. The collaborative project will soon have housing, affordable housing, a new public school, and more. But where are the voices of the people who will actually work in those schools?
Teachers and education workers understand what it actually takes to operate a school, what children need, and how communities can thrive.
This is an opportunity to include those voices in the conversation. It’s the beginning of doing things differently in Toronto.

Food security is an education issue. If a child comes to school hungry, it doesn’t matter what the lesson plan is for that day. Hungry children in Toronto classrooms are a real and growing problem.
That’s why we’re asking every candidate running for mayor: will you support a city-wide lunch program that ensures Toronto children have access to nutritious food at school?
We need to tackle the problem of food insecurity in our classrooms. As candidates running for mayor, will you commit to help? That’s what we mean when we say education starts at home.

Parents were promised answers. Instead, some are waiting months.
Just last month, the Ford government promised parent inquiries would be acknowledged within two business days, with answers targeted within five.
Now, TDSB school councils say they’ve been waiting since July for substantive responses from the government-appointed supervisor. An issue plaguing many boards across the province.
Parents deserve meaningful engagement, not less of a voice in their public schools.

Why is a teachers’ union talking about housing? Because when families cannot afford stable housing, children bring that precarity into their classrooms, affecting their ability to learn. When educators cannot afford to live where they teach, they are pushed farther away from their school communities. And when governments make major decisions about housing, public land, and our neighbourhoods, those decisions directly affect our schools.
Every day, our 10,000 members see something that can no longer be ignored: the housing crisis has become an education issue.
We cannot talk about quality public education without talking about quality, affordable housing. Nor can we overlook how a child’s ability to learn is impacted if their basic needs, including access to nutritious food, are not met.
That is why the Elementary Teachers of Toronto is calling for educators to have a meaningful voice in Toronto’s decisions about housing, student well-being, and public lands, particularly where public schools are involved.
