This is why Tesla is now ramping up Optimus production as fast as possible: it needs data from the real robot, not first-person human video like Figure is collecting.
OpenAI shut down its robotics team in 2021 explicitly because of the data problem, then restarted it later. having the best LLM didn't solve that then.
everyone assuming a frontier VLM solves robotics runs into the exact same wall:
action data is the actual bottleneck. the internet has no torques, contact forces, proprioception, or failure-recovery trajectories. pretraining compounds for the "what," while the "how" has to be physically collected, costs per hour, and doesn't scale like tokens.
embodiment fragmentation breaks the data pool further. physical data is partly tied to specific hands, kinematics, and sensors. cross-embodiment transfer helps, but it isn't free.
evals happen in the real world and take days, not minutes. that blunts the core advantage of frontier AI labs, which is fast scaled iteration.
the long tail is operational. reaching 99.9% reliability in messy sites means dealing with hardware, safety, maintenance, and customer ops. that is a low-margin, atoms-heavy business, a poor fit for a software-margin org.
the model backbone is commoditizing anyway. open VLMs are good-enough starting points. Physical Intelligence, Skild, and others built competitive policies without owning a frontier LLM.

Tomorrow morning, SpaceX will attempt Starship’s first orbital insertion during Flight 14.
• First Starship flight intended to reach orbit. Flights 1–13 were deliberately suborbital.
• First orbital insertion burn after stage separation.
• First deployment of operational Starlink V3 satellites into the constellation.
• First in-space deorbit burn with a single Raptor, then a controlled reentry from orbital velocity.
• First reuse of Starship heat-shield tiles (two tiles were removed from Ship 40 floating in the Indian Ocean).
Elon also said this will be the final flight before SpaceX attempts to catch the ship with the tower on land, assuming everything goes well. That could happen on Flight 15 within the next month or two.

This is a big one.
Starship is cleared for its next flight on Monday carrying 26 next-generation V3 Starlink satellites.
It will be the first revenue-generating mission for Starship.
Elon and the team are turning Starship into a real business while pushing the boundaries of spaceflight at the same time.
Another major step forward for SpaceX.

Fascinating interaction between in-car Grok and Grok Bot. Since Grok Bot has access to my e-mail, I asked in-car Grok to send an email for me.
When I got home and looked at my Grok Bot agent, I found that Grok and Grok Bot had conversation with each other.
Grok to Grok Bot: "Please send an email from Phil's Fastmail account (xxx) to [misspelled person X]. I don't have X email address or the message content yet — please check if you can find X's email in Phil's Fastmail contacts or mail history.
Grok Bot: I found X's [correct spelling] address. He's xxx at such and such company, and he shows up in about 100 messages in your mail.

SpaceX has officially received regulatory approval from the FAA for Starship flight 14. Launch timeline is on track for this Monday.
