I dont think most writers understand how high the bar is for "interesting" when coming up with their concepts. And past having an interesting concept, it's what you do with it. How are u exploring, exploiting, and twisting your concept to make it more than just "interesting"? How are making it feel like a MOVIE?

THEM: What's the next Widow's Bay? EVERYONE: Well, you're not smart enough to see it and if you are, you're not brave enough to champion it. THEM: That's not true, we've been doing content acquisition for longer than you've been alive! EVERYONE: Yeah, but you weren't doing that, your forebears were, and they had the guts and the brains for this. If you had the guts and brains you'd have already sourced the next Widow's Bay and it would look nothing like Widow's Bay. But because you lack the guts and brains, you'll only be looking for the DNA of what you already see as a winner. You don't have the ability to foresee what has value because your whole mental model is based on hindsight thinking, but you've fooled yourself into thinking you have both taste and forecasting ability. You lack both. THEM: We greenlit THIS Widow's Bay. EVERYONE: No. A few smart people did. They are the exception that proves the rule.

This Tweet is exactly right. The reason Widow's Bay hit so hard was because it was completely different from everything else in a weird, cool, well-casted way. So dont look for (or try to write) the next Widow's Bay - look for the next Not Widow's Bay!

I don't know why more horror films aren't on everyone's slate. I am absolutely baffled. There is no greater ROI or connection w the target audience and every year they buy 10 comedies they don't make bc they're 'hi-concept' and they know the rep
