In 1872, Jules Verne published Around the World in Eighty Days, wherein Phileas Fogg says (on Oct. 2, 1872):
"A true Englishman doesn't joke when he is talking about so serious a thing as a wager. I will bet 20,000 pounds against anyone who wishes that I will make the tour of the world in 80 days or less".
Narrator says: "Everybody knows that England is the world of betting men, who are of a higher class than mere gamblers; to bet is in the English temperament. Not only the members of the Reform, but the general public, made heavy wagers for or against Phileas Fogg."
