“I can smell the sea on you.” I watched On the Sea (2025) this afternoon, and I’m still sitting here feeling a little emotional about it. if you’re in the mood for a melancholic queer romance that will leave you staring at the ceiling for a while, I’d recommend giving it a watch. Set in a small fishing community in North Wales, it follows two men with an age gap who find themselves drawn into an affair that feels as beautiful as it is complicated. There’s something about the atmosphere, the quiet intimacy, and the sadness that hangs over their connection that makes the whole thing feel painfully human. It’s the kind of queer story that doesn’t need to be loud to get under your skin. I love when a film allows its characters to be complicated, vulnerable, lonely, and a little lost. Not every love story needs to be perfect, and not every connection comes at the right time or under the right circumstances. Sometimes, two people meet, something happens between them, and you’re left wondering what might have been if life had been a little kinder. Anyway, I’m a little weepy now, and I blame the filmmakers entirely. 😭 But can we also talk about how unfairly attractive sad, middle-aged bisexual dads are?
