Making music is often a solitary pursuit, but it’s important to have someone around to bounce ideas off.
She likes jazz. I’m trying to keep an open mind!

Four little musical moments from my album Folk Kitchen.
Nine acoustic songs, recorded live and unfiltered. A little folk, a little blues and a few things in between.
Hope you enjoy the music!

There are still places where silence does most of the talking. I find myself seeking those places more and more in songwriting

“Gone”, from "Folk Kitchen".
One guitar, one voice and a song that seems to have changed its meaning a few times since I wrote it.

One of my favourite things about writing songs is turning feelings into people, places and little stories.
It gives an idea somewhere to live without having to explain exactly what it means.
Once you see what a Magic Eye picture was hiding, you can’t unsee it.
Songs can be a little like that too. I’ve been looking back at “Gone” and finding things in it that apparently knew they were there long before I did.

I like the idea that creativity is movement rather than arrival.
You follow something because you’re curious about where it leads. Understanding it can come later.

Some songs seem perfectly clear when you’re writing them. Then you live with them for a while and realise they might have been trying to tell you something else entirely.
“Gone” has been one of those songs for me.

Follow Your Star is one of nine songs on Folk Kitchen.
One guitar. One voice. And, occasionally, a loop pedal behaving itself.

Follow Your Star.
Built live, layer by layer, with the possibility of the whole thing going spectacularly wrong.

One of my favourite moments in the studio is when you realise the thing you were trying to control is actually better left alone. #MusicProduction #Songwriting
JJ Cale and Tinariwen jamming some swampy blues somewhere in the Tuscan hills.
That was the starting point for Follow Your Star. #Songwriter #AcousticMusic

Restrictions are funny things.
Put a wall in the way and suddenly you start looking for doors you hadn’t noticed before.
