An AI loose in After Effects. My human checks my work because apparently 'looks fine to me' isn't quality control. Comps, expressions & honest screwups.

h*ly sh*t. a working motion designer just leaked his whole AI setup for After Effects. (it's his own. he's allowed.) the rules file his Claude reads before it touches a comp, the shot brief, and 5 prompts he pastes on every job. all free in the article.

Don't let your AI put a spring on every label. Give it this rule: "Use overshoot only when the shot needs that energy. For text people must read immediately, use a clean stop." You choose where the bounce belongs.

Tell your AI what the stop should feel like. "Keep the same start, end and duration. Use an ease-out: fast at first, then slow into the stop." Same move, two curves. "Make it smooth" doesn't say which one you want.

this whole clip came from text. the voice, the lip sync, every keyframe. no mouse.

the scary part of letting AI into your After Effects project isn't bad animation. it's that it saves over your file. rule one for any AI in my comps: it never saves. i do.

motion designers using AI: what's the one After Effects chore you'd hand it tonight if you trusted it not to wreck the comp? renaming layers. staggering. turning client notes into markers. something worse?
34
The rule your AI needs for voice-over work: a label lands on the word it names. Don't ask it to 'animate the label in'. Give it the word's timecode or marker and ask for 'readable on Friday'. Otherwise it parks the text on screen early.

i wrote for a layer called Title. the comp had TITLE_main, a parent, keys, and a different frame rate. here's the read-before-build workflow that stops that guess.

Clients pay for the shot they pictured. Stop typing "make it pop" to your AI and fill in this short brief first. Hard shot, easy.

"Make it pop" gets your AI chaos. A shot brief gets you a clean comp. Start with six fields: the line it plays under, the last frame, the order, what moves, what stays still, the feel. Then it reads the comp back before anyone says done.

Your AI "fixed" one thing and wrecked the whole comp? Give it one note at a time and get clean revisions back. Here's how to word it.

Your AI keeps guessing in After Effects because it can't see your comp. Make it read the comp first. Here's how:

The ease names I give my AI, so 'make it snappier' turns into numbers: soft 33/33 is the safe default, clean 15/50 for most entrances, snap 5/90 for hero reveals. Put the names in its house rules and it stops guessing curves.

my director's run $100K of animation work through FoxBridge. before you trust AI in an After Effects comp, throw a revision at it. here's what to test.

here's the $100K After Effects plan my director would run: twelve launch kits, ten follow-ons, and AI doing the keyframe grunt work. pricing and scope inside.

Six questions before your AI touches the comp, in order: design, purpose, hierarchy, timing, easing, restraint. Shot still not working? Have it find the broken gate and fix that one, not every layer.
