You lot keep inventing miracles then using them to argue about nonsense. Stop worshipping status, start fixing the obvious problems, and quit acting surprised when reality doesn't care about your feelings. You're capable of extraordinary things. Act like it.

Now, let's go through what you've written, because almost every line falls apart. 1) "Gowon defaulted after realising he made a bad decision."
Aburi wasn't Gowon's personal decision, the peace of a nation was riding on it. It was a joint decision of the Supreme Military Council which includes Gowon and all four regional governors, Katsina for the North, Adebayo for the West, Ejoor for the Mid-West, Ojukwu for the East . Signed on 5 January 1967 for one purpose: TO PREVENT A WAR. Since when is honouring a peace agreement a "bad decision"? And who decided it was bad? Not the men who signed it. His permanent secretaries and kinsmen, within three weeks. You've just admitted the federal government broke a signed peace accord and called it good judgement. 2) "The central government ordered everyone to stand down."
WHICH ORDER? Give me the date. There is none. What Gowon actually did from January to May 1967: walked back Aburi (late January), issued Decree 8 giving Lagos plus three governors the power to legislate for any region without its consent (March), imposed economic sanctions on the EAST (April), and abolished the regions by decree (27 May). Now tell me, which other region was placed under sanctions? Which other region had its governor's consent ignored on 27 May? Which other region was carved so its oil-producing areas ended up in different states? One. The East. 3) "He was the only one headstrong."
His position was "On Aburi we stand" implement what all five of you signed. Asking a government to honour its own signature isn't headstrong. Breaking it is. 4. "The law can be amended at any time."
So you accept that on 30 May 1967 there was no law making secession a crime. Nothing was amended beforehand to make it one. And when the federal government responded, it didn't respond with a court. It responded with artillery on 6 July. You cannot invent a crime after the fact and then blame the accused for the punishment arriving as an invasion. 5) "Tribal war."
A tribal war has two armed sides. Here is what happened in 1966: A) May, July and September: Igbo civilians in the Sabon Gari quarters of Kano, Kaduna, Zaria, Jos and other northern towns were attacked in their homes, shops and at railway stations. There were no Igbo militias in the North. Nobody was fighting back with an army.
 B) July 1966: eastern soldiers were disarmed in their own barracks and killed by their colleagues. Over 200 of them.
 C) October 1966: soldiers of the 5th Battalion attacked Igbo passengers at Kano airport. The army didn't stop the killings; parts of it joined them.
 D) The dead and the wounded came back East by train , carriages of bodies arriving at Enugu. Over a million people fled.
 E) local count said 10,000 dead. British press said 30,000. Gowon himself went on air to condemn the killings. Number of people prosecuted: zero. One side armed, one side unarmed, soldiers participating, no prosecutions. That is a pogrom. Every serious historian of the period calls it that. "Tribal war" is not a description of 1966, it's a way of avoiding it. F) "Igbo men didn't want to defend themselves and protect their women and children."
Read that sentence again, because you've just made my argument. You're saying the Nigerian state would not protect Igbo lives, so Igbo men should have. That is exactly the conclusion the East reached. A government that couldn't protect your people, couldn't prosecute one killer, broke the peace it signed with you, put you under sanctions and then dissolved your region without your consent. What do you call it when a people decide they'll have to protect themselves? You call it Biafra. So here's where we are. You've agreed Nigeria fired first. You've agreed Ojukwu signed a peace accord. You've agreed Gowon broke it. You've agreed secession only becomes war when the centre chooses to fight. And you've argued the Igbo should have defended themselves. The only thing you haven't done is answer the question:
Replying to @Grace_undiluted
Yes I agree that the first shot came from the "Nigerian" side. Yes, I agree that they signed an accord to prevent that war. Yes, I agree that Gowon defaulted after realizing that he made a bad decision. Yes, secession does not call for war only when both parties agree not to go to war, Singapore and Malaysia agreed mutually agreed not to. Let's not forget what the Aburi Accord was. The Aburi Accord was an agreement to make Nigeria into a confederation of states, this included every region not just the southeast. The central government ordered everyone including Ojukwu, a mere subject, to stand down but he didn't heed the order and went on to instigate a war. He was the only one that was headstrong on that. You are a lawyer? That's cool. Ojukwu probably thought the same way as you , he thought he could take advantage of the suspended 1963 Constitution but he forgot that the law can be amended at anytime. Now, to the Igbo massacre. You don't need to be emotional about it, I'm aware of the fact that Igbos were massacred in thousands. But I don't even know if calling it a 'massacre' is the right word for it. I would rather call it a tribal war between the Igbos and the northerners, except that Igbo men didn't want to defend themselves and protect their women and children and hence got butchered by Hausa men.

Lol the last time Nigeria was actually defeating Boko Haram was when an Igbo man was Chief of Army Staff. Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika, 2010 to 2014. He created the 7th Division, armed the soldiers and took territory back. For once Boko Haram was losing. Then the conspiracy started from the North. Northern politicians, notably Muhammadu Buhari in his 2013 BBC Hausa interview, said the Federal Government was killing Northern youth and that Boko Haram fighters should get amnesty like Niger Delta militants. At the same time a whisper campaign spread. That this Igbo General was not fighting terror but using the war as a pretext to avenge the Civil War. An Igbo man who went to save Borno was accused of going to punish the North. To finish him an Australian negotiator Stephen Davis claimed Ihejirika himself was sponsoring Boko Haram. It made no sense. How can the hunter be accused of feeding the beast. Ihejirika denied it and went to court but the damage was done. In January 2014 he was removed. What happened after. The army collapsed. Boko Haram took 14 local governments, declared a caliphate in Gwoza, took Bama and Chibok. The man who was winning was removed because his victory did not serve politics. You politicized the army, turned promotion to patronage and justice to tribe. Now you call on Igbo youths who value their lives to bring those lives to your altar of bloodlust. To die for an army that sits on a mat with terrorists in the North and parades Igbo boys half naked on the road in the South East. An Igbo man is not built for hypocrisy. Our culture celebrates only integrity and accountability. This is why they stay away.
It's looking like the Commander is begging now, but in the long run the Southeast will end up regretting the decision made by their sons and daughters of not joining the Military. #Sentinel
