On October 17, 2026, a controversy erupted at Tiruvannamalai’s Arunachaleswarar Temple when Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna’s personal assistant entered during an official inspection wearing a skullcap. Devotees and journalists objected, citing temple customs. The minister then asked his assistant to remove it, and the inspection continued.
The Madras High Court directed that boards be installed in Hindu temples stating that non-Hindus are not allowed beyond the Kodimaram (flagpole), subject to an exception for those who profess faith in the deity and agree to follow temple customs.
