Just saw another round of “silos are good, actually” going around. They aren’t. Yes, people should be empowered to do their jobs without needing a posse of people and a thousand consensus meetings to do it. But that’s not why silos are a problem in technology.

The startup visa works. The US should create one.
Canada introduced an innovation visa so entrepreneurs could move to Canada and start companies. That led to a 69% increase in the likelihood U.S.-based immigrants would make startups in Canada.

I don't actually think line managers should ever "stop teching" -- too much of their credibility and capacity for excellence is bound up in subject mastery. There's a big difference between "stop teching" and "your primary deliverables are no longer technical ones". HUGE.
Replying to @mipsytipsy
At what point do you stop "teching”? In the military I had senior leaders flying to varying degrees. Junior officers or “managers” are often operators in their skill sets and still practice as they lead. The all-in on “people” management seems strange.

Love seeing @Cloudflare continue to demonstrate security best practices and hate to see @okta getting called out again. I love the promise of @okta and @auth0 but at a minimum expect their communication about these incidents to be proactive

Props to @notarize for putting together a simple notary process at the same price point as in person

The perfect time to loosen immigration restrictions.
Folks, unemployment in America has now been below 4% for the longest stretch in 53 years.

one of the easiest policy wins i can imagine for the US is to reform high-skill immigration. the fact that many of the most talented people in the world want to be here is a hard-won gift; embracing them is the key to keeping it that way. hard to get this back if we lose it.

Yesterday some users were not able to complete the H-1B registration process. USCIS has fixed this technical issue & will now accept registrations until 5:00 pm ET Monday, March 20, 2023. Please note any paid & completed registrations were not affected by this technical issue.

I'm one of the few members of Congress who has been on an H-1B visa back when processing times to transition to a green card weren’t nearly as bad—and it still took 17 years to become a citizen. We must pass the Eagle Act for all those who have waited too long for a green card.

11. The US is no longer the top choice of foreign talent when asked where they would move for work. We cannot rest on our laurels and need to start improving our immigration system.

I'm receiving word you can order free covid tests from the USPS again — and this time you get eight. This is worth doing if not just to experience the fastest, cleanest web form in the history of governmental internet. special.usps.com/testkits

Always disappointed when I hear there are junior developers working for below market salary/equity for startups that are "working on closing their round." If you're one of these devs, you have more leverage than you know.
