I can't put down John Wyver's (@Illuminations) "Magic Rays of Light" — a captivating study of British television's early years offering new eyes on an all-too-familiar medium by tracing its earliest fits, starts & achievements. Great, literate, fun read. bloomsbury.com/us/magic-rays…

For 25 years we've given away archival film footage at archive.org/details/prelinge…. Our images are in uncountable films and videos and play worldwide. And AI video models crawl them. If we kept some of our footage offline, would it be fresher, less likely to be cloned? Just asking.

New blackout in the #RichmondDistrict, much the same as the big one last week. Tired of this, @PGE4Me @DanielLurie

Our power in the Richmond District has now been out for 12.5 hours. We are one door away from an area that was restored after 7 hours. @PGE4Me @PGE_BayArea

Great night at Lost Landscapes last night, if you were there, let me know. Maybe you're going tonight! (first time ever I didn't take any pictures of it, here's a favorite of mine from a few years back) #sfhistory @footage

Rick Prelinger has spent his life chasing the things most people throw away. He treats discarded film reels, fading pamphlets, lost newsreels, and forgotten home movies as if they were rare minerals in the deeper layers of culture. For him, history is not the polished version that shows up in textbooks. It is the rougher sediment left behind by ordinary people. He has spent decades restoring that sediment, cataloging it, sharing it, and pushing others to see its value. At the Long Now talk in the Herbst Theatre on December 3, 2025, he carried that presence of a man who has lived inside the archive long enough to know its pulse. His manner is calm and curious. His voice has the quality of someone who has spent years listening before speaking. He holds ideas the way a careful projectionist holds a film canister. He knows the contents are fragile. He also knows they matter. @footage @longnow @internetarchive More: explorers.com/rick-prelinger…

Archivists have said for years: preservation without access is pointless. Beginning in 02000, Prelinger Archives (@footage), in collaboration with @internetarchive, have digitized thousands of films, many of which were precious home movies and amateur films which were in danger of erasure. Collectively these have been downloaded billions of times. This preserves, Rick Prelinger writes, “an immense reservoir of images, sounds and ideas for the makers of the present and the future.” Read more about the project on Ideas here: longnow.org/ideas/no-film-le…

Cutting, cutting, cutting #lostlandscapes. 188 minutes that need to become 75. In the words of Keller Easterling, subtraction is growth.
