I know the past few months have been hard and dispiriting. But watching the heightened activism of young people makes me hopeful. And if we can keep channeling our justifiable anger into peaceful, sustained, and effective action, this can be the moment when real change starts.
In this nightmare, there were no walls, and anyone could walk right in. They touched everything. They laughed and talked. #Socialdistancing was ignored. I begged them to put masks on, wash their hands, leave me alone. They just crowded closer and closer, circling.
Best quality of life improvement made so far this #lockdown is the punching bag. Bored? Hit the bag. Stressed? Bag. Read the news? Bag-bag-bag-bagbagbag.
"Your Move," by me, 2018. Silverpoint (silver wire) on a marbledust true gesso panel. It's fun because every mark is permanent, and it will darken over time as the silver tarnishes. The eye-glints were made with a knife.
"Halo of Fangs," by me. Original character line art, 2017ish. Would love to redraw this year. Loosely inspired by #Darksouls and my penchant for hiding as many flowers, insects, and leaves into a drawing as I can. (Those are supposed to be dragonflies among the ginkgo leaves).
Dreamt of a gourmet bakery with customers lined up out the door. It overflowed with golden light and sweet aromas. Everyone was cheerful. But it was a nightmare because no one was #socialdistancing or wearing masks. I spent the dream trying to run away.
What I #amwriting isn't just an excuse to play with swords. But damn is it fun. Also, I wish more #fantasy featured spears. They are magnificent weapons and can easily outmatch the swords I used to think were superior. Had to meet a spear-wielder to learn that one. Was impressed.
Woke from a dream where people were about to kidnap a suspected witch off the road. Don’t have nightmares often, and it wouldn’t have been so bad but for the way the kidnappers were grinning and joking as they closed in. Now can’t sleep.
Silverpoint under-drawing for “Ghost Lake,” by me. Drawn with silver wire on true gesso panel. Paired with final version (#eggtempera ) on right.
Death haunts my writing. I never write with grim intention, but there it is. I grew up with intense death anxiety. It stopped being anxiety when I started writing. When I write, that old shadow leans over the page and asks what color the leaves are. It’s hard to be afraid of that
"Memoirs of a Skeleton Valet," painted by me, 2019, oil glaze over egg tempera. Inspired by @dscottcalhoun 's amazing #magicalrealism novel, which you can read here: wattpad.com/story/206406681-…
“Ghost Lake,” by me, 2018. Egg tempera on true gesso. Green pigment is crushed malachite (synthetic).
Hardboiling twenty-one eggs in a single pot because it turns out I didn’t feel like having scrambles nearly as often as I thought I would in #quarantine, haha.
"Scent of the Magnolia." Painted by me, 2018. Handmade gum arabic on plaster, natural earth pigments (and synthetic lapis lazuli).
