"The Odyssey" translator Emily Wilson doubles down on criticizing Christopher Nolan's movie, this time calling it "emotionally empty."
“Nolan’s 'Odyssey' is itself a kind of Trojan horse. The script grandly insists on the importance of human kindness, while the camera shows us an entirely different set of values. In these times of hatred and misinformation, we need more than the ‘apparent magic’ of deceptive images. We need art that is truthful about the costs and the necessity of compassion, and that recognizes that a sense of spiritual superiority may not protect us from lies. These lessons are legible in Homer and Virgil, but are elided by Nolan’s visually stunning, emotionally empty film.”
“What matters cinematically are the logistics: the rolling of the horse uphill and the claustrophobic, waterlogged interior. Once the ambush of the Trojans begins, the camera lingers repeatedly not on the human actors but on the enflamed, toppling buildings and the great gates of the city, whose slow-moving mechanism is observed at great length. The script tells us loudly that people matter, but the camera shows us that what matters is the mechanical challenge of moving objects through space.”

Hollywood’s favorite story: the broke outsider who self-financed an $80k movie on credit cards.
The receipts: a ~$1M elite education, $330k+ in grants on her prior film, and a father - a Chinese real-estate and equity investor - credited as an executive producer.

Have you heard of the @ParisTheaterNYC in Midtown Manhattan right across from Central Park? @netflix bought it for this purpose, to avoid theatrical distribution and barely qualify for awards contention by having openings in New York City (or LA), per Academy rules. Clever, huh?

Another great bit of blocking, staging, and subtle camera movement in Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence to continually reshape this moving master shot. Arguably six unique compositions in one. What I always love about these shots is the way in which they are intentionally telling an evolving story. This film often uses perpendicularly connected room layouts to enable a number of these kinds of evolving shots. Love it.

Educative minute:
Film twitter, please know that all these "amateur 35mm scans" comparison are deceptive.
1. Films are made of atoms (nitrate, acetate, polyester), and unlike digital data, they are vulnerable to entropy like everything else.
2. For the same movie, not all theatrical projection prints were made with the same process. Most were poor quality with short shelf-life (6 years according to Martin Scorsese).
3. Dye compounds are unstable, decaying at different rates over time, their colors degrading, fading & shifting. Notice how most of these "35mm scans" are bluish & faded, with contrast added in post after scanning.
4. Even if you had a perfectly manufactured, flawlessly stored & maintained, and masterfully scanned film, digitalization remains an interpretation process. A projected film is pure light, and mapping a RAW capture to the displayable dynamic range of screens is a subjective process, not a perfect science.
So never interpret these 35mm scans as "how a film was supposed to look". No two surviving 35mm films look the same, and none look the way they did at release.
These are just films degraded by hundreds of theatrical runs & decade of chemical decay. This organic "instagram filter" evokes a certain nostalgia, but it's an illusion.
There is no pristine original to go back to. Even the original negatives stored by studios require month of digital cleaning to be considered "usable".
It's all a subjective process.

All hopes dashed that the film would serve as a jarring exemplar of plausible looming encounters, seeing as the old-timey vintage instinct to show aliens as skinny-fingered green sluggish inefficient gentle monsters just keeps recurring from midcentury film grammar. #humancentric

Sinners is by far the most gaslit movie of all time. The critics have engaged in such a transparent campaign to manufacture its importance that it's hysterical.
When it wins Best Picture (and it will win), it will expose how much of a farce the Academy Awards have become.

Actual root of problem: curating politically divisive & expediently virtuous activist melodramas. #Berlinale needs to kick out activist curators and focus on...ART (imagine that) before rotating judges even get their paws on the lineup.
