Public and political calls for @PresidentIRL and @MichealMartinTD in their meeting with @POTUS @realDonaldTrump tomorrow Saturday 9/12 to denounce "genocide", and express indignation are unwise. Instead, and in the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement, they should focus on what Trump CAN do. If there is one message that bears urgency for Donald Trump’s meetings tomorrow with President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin, it is not about Ireland, nor Gaza alone, but about unique ability of the US President to change the course of history – for the better. One public sentence by Trump could do it, overcoming the grievance of “double standards” against the West and USA in particular, rife throughout the Arab and Islamic worlds (a “causus belli” for many, especially Iran): “The United States recognises the State of Palestine”, followed by America lifting its P5 veto on Palestine’s membership of the United Nations. Already recognised by 157 (81 per cent) of UN Member States, including Ireland, and the other P5 veto powers (Britain, China, France and Russia), such an act would breathe unison into the dysfunctional UN Security Council, and resolve the UN’s most egregious failure since its Partition Plan for Palestine in 1947, adopted by UNGA resolution 181 (II). Other consequences on immediate import would be: the reversal of Israel’s downward slide and a return to more-liberal and constitutional democracy, the renewal of the peace process, leading to a probable confederation in the Holy Land, and the expansion of the Abraham Accords throughout the entire region, and the fulfilment of the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002. It would also disempower the Iranian proxies, Hamas, Hezbullah and the Houthis, and be a better recipe for positive change in Iran itself than waging further war. It would save Lebanon from chaos. It amuses me that an American academic @hofrench takes it upon himself to recommend that Spain "return" Ceuta to Morocco. #Ceuta has been a Spanish possession for far longer than the USA has been "independent", i.e. for about 358 to 446 years (depending on whether you date it from the Iberian Union in 1580 or formal permanent sovereignty in 1668), while the United States has been independent only for 250 years since 1776. In fact, it has never belonged to the modern Kingdom of Morocco, which only achieving full political unification and control under Moulay al-Rashid in 1666, under the Alaouite dynasty. The territory now known as Ceuta was last under the effective control of an older Moroccan ruling state in August 1415, when it was conquered by King John I of Portugal. This is what this "historian", Howard W. French, is missing about Ceuta. Pan-Africanist perspectives generally miss out that the North African coastline was also an important part of the Roman Empire, and shared a common culture, economy, and heritage with southern Europe for about 550 to 585 years. This integrated era began with the annexation of Carthage in 146 BCE and lasted until the Vandal conquest of Carthage in 439 CE, which broke the unified Roman political and economic system, only to be followed by Arab/Muslim invasions and conquest all the way into Iberia, until repulsed. The region reached its peak golden age in the 2-3rd centuries CE, exporting massive amounts of grain and olive oil to Rome and producing prominent authors and emperors like Septimius Severus.
