Defending the rupee in the short term by using up reserves weakens the country's longer term buffer.
A large part of the recent increase in reserves came from temporary dollar inflows that the RBI has to return later. Because of these future commitments, the amount of dollars that can actually be used to support the rupee is smaller than the headline number suggests.
This is why the effective cover for imports is just closer to seven months, one of the lowest ever.
If oil prices stay high, global interest rates remain elevated, and foreign investors continue to pull out money, the rupee is likely to come under renewed and stronger pressure.
In that case, further heavy intervention would use up the remaining usable reserves even faster and raise doubts about how long the central bank can keep defending the currency.

Benjamin Graham, the man who taught Warren Buffett, once lost nearly everything in the 1929 crash and still came back to write the rules.
He had been doing well. A partnership, a rising reputation, money that felt solid. Then the market broke. Clients fled. The fund fell hard.
Graham later said he was ruined in the practical sense. Not just poorer. Doubting the whole game and losing confidence in himself.
He did not quit. He went back to the books. He started looking for stocks that were cheaper than the cash and assets the company already owned, so that even a bad business had a floor.
That idea, the margin of safety, came out of the wreck. He wanted a method that could survive another 1929.
The part people skip is the personal cost. He had a young family. The 1930s were thin. He kept teaching at Columbia, kept writing, kept managing what little was left. Security Analysis appeared in 1934, written with David Dodd, while the Depression was still on.
The book was not a victory lap. It was a set of rules made by a man who had just been wiped out.

Being kind as a doctor is not only about charging less.
My fees could easily be higher. I have simply chosen to keep them modest.
The same goes for tests and medicines. I don't order a test just because I can, and when one is needed, I send patients to labs that give good discounts. I don't write a medicine just because the patient expects one. I prescribe only what is truly needed, and choose the option that gives the best balance of quality and cost.
Many ultrasound scans cost nothing extra. They are part of the consultation, and the fees stay modest despite the years of experience (and the salt and pepper moustache 😃).
A patient comes to us with fear and full trust. Real empathy is never taking advantage of that, whether in fees, tests, or medicines.
I have never regretted it.
