The UK is debating whether to introduce a copyright exception for AI training on publicly accessible works
I support this, with an opt-out for the few who this may impact.
Activists and publishers commonly cite DCMS arguing that the creative sector contributes 125bn in value to the UK
That stat is highly misleading. My recommendations 🧵

Author Tim Boucher explains how requiring (c) licensing of all genAI training content "results in less competition among tech companies, more revenue funneled to big media corporations and at most a trickle of spoils for artists." theinformation.com/articles/…

Fun things to do with your limited o1-preview uses that can show you the power and limitations:
🤖Give it an RFP and ask it to just do the work
🤖Give it an academic paper & ask it to offer strategies for replication
🤖Ask it to create an entrepreneurial product that it can build

... and, it was ever thus. Technology unsettles, energizes, challenges, supercharges, scares, excites, and ultimately fuels progress in almost every endeavor. Art's certainly no exception for those who embraced harness its power. So say the artists profiled in the Post:
This is the correct take. AI is a tool. Like drum machines, samplers, loop pedals, and on and on, it is derided as "soul-less," cheap, unprofessional, and even illegal, but the artists that can't resist playing with it will show us the way forward. washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

This is funny, but it raises important points that merit exploration. Some thoughts on this:
1) Big rights holders are, indeed, suing AI cos. over stuff like this. They don't want to sue it out of existence, though. Their goal is to take a windfall profit by taxing these tools.

👀Claude handles an insane request:
“Remove the squid”
“The document appears to be the full text of the novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. It doesn't contain any mention of squid that I can see.”
“Figure out a way to remove the 🦑“

First class action lawsuit against an AI voice cloning company in Lehrman v LOVO. Interestingly, not an IP case, it's civil rights, false advertising, fraud, unjustified enrichment, etc. pollockcohen.com/docs/2024.0…

"Fairness and Fair Use in Generative AI" now live on the Fordham L. Rev. website. fordhamlawreview.org/issues/… Looking for way to draw a line between "AI training is always legal" and "AI training without express permission is always (c) infringement", this might be for you.

Collective licensing for AI training is a fantasy. The reality will be an AI tax used to fund worthy causes. That might be a good idea, but it won't be like ASCAP
.@matthewsag: I funadamenally do not understand how a collective licensing model to facilitate AI could ever work. Collecting societies only pay out to creators when their work is used. With #GenerativeAI there is no way of knowing how much an item contributes.

As you know, my explorations of the Gen AI space is ultimately all about creative control. You should be able to shape the generative matter using all your artistic sensibilities and your aesthetic sense.
OpenAI's Sora is a huge technological leap, but what excites me the most about it is the modalities where it depends on input other than text alone. Such as video to video. Here's an example of how Sora can change an input video.
