The true guardians of the #RedSea come from their guardian #Ethiopia 🇪🇹 While coastal states met to claim exclusive control, Ethiopia’s population, economy, history, and security interests make it central to the waterway. #RedSea #Ethiopia #HornOfAfrica #Nile #OurWaters 🤝@Tseday

A Nation of 130 Million Cannot Be Locked Away from the Sea This week, Eritrean soldiers crossed into Ethiopia. They came through Zalambessa and drove through Adigrat, and their officers were seen in Edaga Hamus, deep inside our Tigray region. Witnesses saw trucks full of troops on Ethiopian roads, and the conflict monitor ACLED tracked their movement. On October 7 and 8, Ethiopian drones struck them near Adigrat, and reports say they pulled back. However Asmara describes it, the facts are simple: foreign soldiers entered our land without permission. That is a violation of Ethiopia's sovereignty, and no country in the world would accept it. Ethiopia's Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, told the United Nations exactly that. He said Eritrean forces must leave Ethiopian territory immediately, and that Ethiopia has the right to defend its sovereignty under international law. Eritrea's answer was not a denial. Its Information Minister only said Ethiopia was inventing a "narrative of self-defense." But a country whose soldiers are found in another nation's towns is in no position to talk about invented stories. Last week, after Ethiopia expelled Eritrean diplomats and closed its embassy in Asmara, Eritrea cut all diplomatic ties. The message from Addis Ababa should stay calm and firm: Eritrea must stay out of Ethiopia's territory and out of Ethiopia's internal affairs. Behind this crisis is a bigger truth. Ethiopia is a nation of about 130 million people, one of the largest in Africa, and it has no coastline. Until 1993, Ethiopia had the port of Assab and a home on the Red Sea. Since Eritrea's independence, almost all of our trade has had to pass through one neighbor, Djibouti, and pay its fees. Our nearest border is only about 30 miles from the sea. No growing nation can build its future while depending on one door that someone else holds the key to. That is why Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed spoke so clearly when he was sworn in for a new term on October 5. "Based on the principle of give and take," he said, "we will work diligently to ensure that Ethiopia has an outlet to the sea." These are not the words of a country seeking war. They are the words of a country seeking a fair deal: trade, partnership, shared investment, and shared benefit. Ethiopia is asking to be treated as what it already is, a Red Sea nation by history, geography, and need. Our neighbors have answered in different ways. Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said Ethiopia could use two or three Somali ports if the two governments make a direct agreement, and that is a door worth walking through. But on October 4, Egypt hosted Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia in New Alamein, where they declared that "the governance of the Red Sea is the exclusive responsibility of the littoral states." In other words, Ethiopia should have no voice in the waters at its own doorstep. The same declaration also brought up the Nile, and that tells us a lot. Egypt's interest is no secret. For years Cairo has opposed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Ethiopians built with their own money to bring light to millions of homes. Now Egypt is using the Red Sea as a second way to pressure Ethiopia. It has signed port and maritime agreements with Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia, the very countries around us. Many Ethiopians see this as a plan to surround and weaken their country, and to keep it poor and dependent, through the sea as well as the river. The wider world is watching, too. The Red Sea is one of the busiest trade routes on earth, linking Europe, Asia, and Africa through the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Suez Canal. The Gulf states, especially the United Arab Emirates, have invested heavily in ports along the Horn of Africa. The United States wants the shipping lanes to stay safe and the region to stay stable. A stable, growing Ethiopia with fair access to the sea serves all of these intere
