Being a training officer is no easy task. Your position, perhaps more than any other, has the potential to influence an entire generation of firefighters positively or negatively.
This is especially true in a small department, where a small number of people are led by an even smaller number of officers. These leaders often have significantly greater influence than they would in a larger organization.
Your responsibility as a training officer isn’t less in a small department. It is actually greater because your ability to delegate is far less and you have fewer resources to help you.
Unfortunately, much of what you do as a training officer is dictated by the department’s budget, which ranges from inadequate to nonexistent in many small departments.
Your work as a training officer will be difficult and rarely glamorous, but it will always matter.
The way you choose to lead, mentor, and inspire today will echo in every call answered tomorrow. That is the true legacy of a training officer: not simply teaching skills but building people who will stand ready when their community needs them most.
By setting SMART goals, getting to know your people, and finding creative ways to build skill and camaraderie, you can transform ordinary individuals into a cohesive, confident force capable of extraordinary outcomes.

Breaking the Chain of Contamination: A Practical Approach to Biological Exposure Control for Fire & EMS
-with Clint Greenwood
Emergency responders routinely encounter biological contamination through patient care, blood and body fluids, infectious materials, contaminated environments, and vector pests. The incident may end when the unit clears the scene—but contamination can continue traveling on clothing, PPE, equipment, apparatus, and personal belongings.
This webinar examines the entire contamination pathway, from initial recognition and exposure control through isolation, personal decontamination, equipment processing, documentation, and return to service. Participants will also examine emerging approaches to chemical-free decontamination, including how heat, humidity, and UVC technologies can be incorporated into a comprehensive exposure-control program.

Welcome to Tactical Decision Gaming (TDGs), where you learn by doing. Today's game: a vacant strip mall.
Click the link to begin the simulation: fireengineering.com/firefigh…
How a TDG works:
- You are the company officer on the first-arriving engine.
- You will be dispatched to a fire.
- Uncertainty is part of the game. You will get some, but not all, information.
- Just like the real world you will arrive at the fire and make decisions.
- Give your size-up IN RADIO LANGUAGE.
- Direct your crew.
- Give orders to the next arriving companies IN RADIO LANGUAGE.
That’s it. Do your best! Have fun! Learn!

Your PPE: What You Should Know
-with Tim Pillsworth
Our most used piece of equipment in the fire service is our personal protective equipment. It is the only equipment that is used at every alarm. Far too many fire fighters do not have the proper knowledge of their PPE. Learn the importance of PPE with case histories of what our PPE cannot do, proving it is not anything "proof." Included is a simplified review of the NFPA standards of PPE garments and the new NFPA 1970; a step-by-step method on how to specify, bid, and place in service PPE; and the proper cleaning and care of PPE.

Mental health struggles, addiction, and personal battles can haunt any firefighter, regardless of race, sexuality, rank, or experience. Performing a self-exorcism means facing those demons and having the courage to ask for help. Maybe your department didn’t offer the support you needed (it happens more than we know), or you felt nobody was listening–that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. External resources, support groups, and professionals are available. You don’t have to fight this battle alone. Put pride aside, reach out, and ask for help because your health, and life, are worth fighting for.
STAY FIRED UP and remember, sometimes the demons we fight aren’t on the fireground: ow.ly/W2cc50ZX96v

Designing a PPE and SCBA Decontamination Room
Fireground carcinogens can remain on turnout gear, SCBA harnesses, facepieces, gloves, and hoods long after an incident—and without a controlled cleaning environment, those contaminants can travel into apparatus bays, offices, living quarters, personal vehicles, and firefighters’ homes. This webcast will examine how a purpose-built PPE and SCBA decontamination room can help interrupt that pathway, reduce secondary exposure, and support a more comprehensive cancer-prevention strategy.
Attendees will learn the key considerations for designing a decontamination space around a defined dirty-to-clean workflow, including the separation of contaminated and clean equipment, technician safety, cleaning consistency, documentation, and operational efficiency. The session will also explore how departments can move beyond improvised cleaning areas and create a process that supports modern PPE and SCBA maintenance and contamination-control practices.

Nozzle Reaction Reimagined: New Research, New Technology, and the Search for “Just Right”
-with Jason Cerrano
What is the “just right” balance of nozzle pressure, reaction, control, and flow? Firefighters have debated that question for years, but evolving research and nozzle technology are bringing new perspectives to the conversation.
Jason Cerrano, inventor of SAM and Director of R&D at Hale Products, will examine the science behind nozzle reaction, share perspectives from ongoing research efforts, and discuss how pressure and flow can affect hose-line performance and firefighter control. Attendees will gain practical insights they can apply to nozzle operations and learn how fire departments can help support future nozzle reaction studies.

EV Fire Response – Stop the NOISE!! We can do this – Getting back to the basics.
-with Dalan Zartman
As a fire service, we have been overloaded with the chemistry and thermal behavior of lithium-ion batteries. Yet, we still struggle to hear a clear messaging regarding the tactics, tools and techniques required to combat these fires. This webinar will be a dynamic q and a forum in which Dalan Zartman brings international real world experience dealing with major EV and BESS events to the table. That experience is combined with the scientific foundation of the most credible research projects to provide effective and efficient pathways to make tactical and technical decisions on these incidents and achieve successful outcomes.
