During President Nelson’s time as the prophet, there were several themes that came up again and again. He often framed them as SPIRITUAL warnings rather than predictions of specific disasters. DO NOT TAKE YOUR TESTIMONY FOR GRANTED. He warned members that they can’t simply rely on someone else’s testimony, urged them to “take charge” of their own testimony: work for it, nourish it, and feed it truth. He specifically warned against allowing false philosophies to weaken it. DO NOT EXPECT TO SURVIVE SPIRITUALLY WITHOUT THE HOLY GHOST. He warned that “in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without” the constant influence of the Holy Ghost. This was connected to the enormous volume of competing voices, philosophies, information and social-media messages confronting people. DO NOT LET THE WORLD DROWN OUT REVELATION. He repeatedly warned about confusing the “voices” of the world with the voice of God and taught members to develop their ability to receive personal revelation. He emphasized that information should be evaluated carefully, including considering the source and its motivations. DO NOT LET POLITICAL, CULTURAL, OR OTHER IDENTITIES REPLACE YOUR ETERNAL IDENTITY. He specifically pleaded with young adults not to replace the three identities he identified as fundamental: a child of God, a child of the covenant, and a disciple of Jesus Christ. DO NOT ABANDON THE COVENANT PATH. From the beginning of his presidency, Nelson repeatedly warned members about drifting away from covenants and urged them to remain on the covenant path. He said, “I urge you to get on the covenant path and stay there." DO NOT NEGLECT REPENTANCE. He pleaded with members to experience the strengthening power of daily repentance—continually doing and becoming a little better. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE ADVERSARY'S INCREASING INFLUENCE. He explicitly taught that “the assaults of the adversary are increasing exponentially, in intensity and in variety.” He connected this warning to the need for greater spiritual protection, particularly through temple worship and covenants. DO NOT NEGLECT THE TEMPLE. He warned that the world’s increasing spiritual pressures made temple worship more—not less—important. He said, “Our need to be in the temple on a regular basis has never been greater.” DO NOT BECOME SPIRITUALLY COMPLACENT BECAUSE OF DIFICULT TIMES. He frequently spoke about the increasingly challenging spiritual environment in which Church members would live. His answer wasn’t to retreat in fear, but to increase faith, revelation, covenant keeping, temple worship and reliance on Jesus Christ." BE PREPARED FOR THE SECOND COMING. This became increasingly prominent in his later presidency. He taught that temple worship, covenants and spiritual preparation would help members prepare for the Savior’s return. Looking across Nelson’s presidency, his warnings seem to become increasingly focused on SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT. There is an important distinction: Nelson generally didn’t present these as warnings that Church members should panic about particular POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, or GEOPOLITICAL events. His recurring warning was that the world would become increasingly SPIRITUALLY CONFUSING and that disciples would need greater personal revelation and spiritual strength to navigate it. One thing that stands out is that his warnings were remarkable consistent. He repeatedly warned that the SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT would become more difficult and that members would need: Personal Revelation. The Holy Ghost. Covenants. Temple Worship.
