Tip from Bo Shen at #UEGWeek:
If you see anastomotic staples in the colon, consider removing them if:
1. Loose or protruding
2. ONLY if in situ for >6 months
Because these can be with complications such as ulceration, bleeding and stricture.

What is the optimal duration of antibiotics after ERCP decompression for cholangitis?
The #UEGWeek 2026 top abstract prize goes to Anouk Overdevest for her work on the COBRA trial, which shows that 1 day of antibiotic is non-inferior to 4-7 day courses 👏🏆

Dietary and gut microbiota interventions matter for restoring the gut barrier
Timmie A. Britton & Prof. @mgrover_gi update the role of the gut barrier in disorders of gut-brain interaction and interventions to improve it:
👉 Microbial dysbiosis from diet, disease, or antibiotics can leave the intestinal lining exposed to pathogens
👉 Using a simplified, less restrictive low-FODMAP diet might be prudent for improving gut barrier function mainly in IBS, but some evidence shows benefits in functional dyspepsia
👉 Complex dietary fiber blends support gut barrier function by serving as important energy substrates for select bacterial commensals that ferment them into short-chain fatty acids
👉 Glutamine and other amino acids shape enteric immunity, mucus production, and gut microbiota profiles
💡 Rather than expecting that one single nutrient or diet will improve gut barrier function, think of broad dietary patterns that are mostly plant-based and reduce saturated fatty acids

GPT-6 Astra just solved a problem medical students have been facing for decades
Medical students have been working around the same three problems for decades. Someone talked to them, identified all three, and built a service with Astra that solves them in one tool.
The problems are structural. Flat anatomical diagrams strip depth out of organs entirely. CT cross-sections don't connect naturally to the overview diagrams students spend years memorizing. And reading a scan requires holding three mental models simultaneously - patient orientation, cross-section direction, and how every organ shape shifts through each layer.
Astra built a service that handles all three in one place. Not a better textbook. A spatial tool that connects the diagram, the CT view, and the 3D relationship together.
Medical education hasn't changed its core format in over a century. This might be the first tool designed around how anatomy is actually understood - not just displayed.
