"Good code documents itself" is one of the most damaging takes in software engineering. Code itself won't tell you about the decisions and rationale behind it, nor about about higher-level structures and abstractions. All this needs elaboration in documentation.

I managed multiple engineering teams before quitting big tech. Now that I quit, I can speak freely. Here are 12 things your manager may not be telling you, but I know for a fact will help you. 👇

I second that.
When it comes to code, twenty years of experience has taught me that verbosity and clarity trumps elegance and magic every single time.

It's Okay to say "I don't know!" There's no shame in that! The only shame is to pretend that we know everything.

The remote organization's communications manifesto: 📝 Written communication over calls 📧 Async (e-mail) over sync (chat) 🗣️ Mailing lists over direct mail ⚖️ It's a mindset, not a dogma: these are defaults, deviate when the situation calls for it.

Last few days using @karatedsl to test the cli interface of jbang has verified that if don't have tests for it then the code is broken. not only found weirdness in Windows batch/cmd but also found dumb blunders in the linux/osx wrapper script. Testing ftw :)

Me writing code and realizing it's not quite right... But I have a lazy/genius idea that will avoid having rewrite everything!

Readability is more important than writability for Java If you can read it, then you can maintain it If you can maintain it, then it provides better ROI We expect Java code written will run for many years, so this is an important factor. #MovedbyJava

I really disliked @Deprecated in #Java because it was not helpful at all. Plain annotation without any suggestion what to use instead is just waste of time. JDK 9 didn't make it much better. Turns out in #golang world it's ain't much different.
