Use of AI agents is becoming more prevalent in science. But in an outbreak, a single wrong sequence can shift what we think a virus came from, or if a treatment still works.
We ask, can a deterministic retrieval layer fix the unreliability of AI agents querying NCBI Virus?

Code is the blind spot of peer review, and many serious errors that may invalidate a paper's conclusions can stay hidden in scientific repositories. We study whether coding agents can help make code review feasible for science.
Check out our paper, where we apply agentic scientific code review to 100 NeurIPS 2025 papers (link below), and meet us at NeurIPS 2026!
We find that codebases are often missing, incomplete, or contain methodological problems.
We think that AI-auditing can make computational science more rigorous and reproducible!
Thanks to my co-first @ferbsx, and co-authors Katharina Baum and Bernhard Renard.
The bottleneck for AI in science isn't just smarter models. It's the missing infrastructure and trust to rely on them.
gget virus is one piece of that. The bigger goal is still to make AI genuinely able to accelerate global health.
That's the future I want to help build! 🚀
"Using AI agents to navigate biological data infrastructure is like driving through an old city that was designed before cars." @NeuroLuebbert in the @AnthropicAI blog post about our work.
Adding highway tunnels, like gget virus, is the fix!

New Science Blog: Why has AI advanced faster in coding than in biology?
To agents, bio databases are like cities built before cars—maddening to drive in because they're designed for different traffic.
How do we build infrastructure agents can use?

For a case study in why proper sequence retrieval matters - we look for existing Ebolavirus mutations in the footprints (spheres) of WHO priority antibodies for the ongoing outbreak.
Without the right tools, the initial sequence sets are wrong, and downstream analysis fails.

AI is incredible for speeding up science, but in an outbreak response, one data error can have life-or-death consequences.
Super proud to share our work showing how deterministic retrieval layers bridge this gap to guarantee 100% reliable workflows for global health security!

Ferdous Nasri presenting her work on the 'Spatio-temporal immunity index tool for infectious diseases' at the Digital Health Summit @UCT_news in Cape Town, South Africa!
Happy that I had the honour of presenting my work at the Digital Health Summit in Cape Town, and got the chance to get into great discussions with researchers on the continent!
Thanks to @ictdchick for organising the summit and bringing us all together 💐
