New year new work from the lab! We explore whether aggression experience and observation lead to similar changes in future aggression strategy. (They do!) We perform 2-color imaging across the whole social behavior network across time and track changes biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Are you a clinical psychologist interested in computational modeling? The Niv lab will be looking for a postdoc in computational psychiatry/psychotherapy and we are especially keen on people with a clinical background. Email me with CV & research statement if this is you!
👀 that’s fast!
Struggling with AnnData? Meet AnnSQL, our python package for lightning-fast scRNA-seq analysis:
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
AnnSQL achieves ~700x runtime improvements over AnnData, enabling datasets with millions of cells to be queried in minutes on a laptop using elegant SQL syntax.

Such a pleasure working with this team (@MicTott @SvitlanaBach @martinowk @stephaniehicks @VincentCostaPhD) to systematically describe primate amygdalar neuron molecular diversity in anatomical terms. Stay tuned for insights into neuron-type function.
26 years after Larry Swanson emphasized “the amygdala is neither a structural or functional unit” we used sn-RNAseq to answer the question:
“What is the [primate] amygdala?”
Check out the preprint 👇

As a recovering neuronal chauvinist I was amazed at the glial heterogeneity revealed by the brilliant @meschro in this project. We find extensive customization of astrocytes across development and between species. Why, how, and when does this happen? Let us know what you think 🧐
Very excited to share our pre-print and my thesis work on the postnatal development of astrocyte regional heterogeneity, which includes an integrated dataset of >1.4 million single nuclei transcriptomes in mouse and marmoset brains (now available online)!

But is it physics? Hopfield tackled three profound questions about emergence: condensed matter from interactions between elementary particles, the magic of life from interactions between dead molecules, and intelligence/consciousness from interactions between dumb neurons.
