We are the only way the universe may observe itself. We are the most interesting specks of dust in existence.
and here we are, specks of dust living in fear and paying taxes.

Tip: you can make yourself sound smarter by randomly interrupting your sentences with “of course.” This is, of course, meaningless, but it gives the impression of being a confident expert.

I find phones so incredibly painful to use I could never become addicted. Laptops on the other hand ...
Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

The perfect Cinderella film exists; a straight retelling would be pointless. If you set aside the cultural baggage that makes us assume abuse, it's a perfectly valid story. But villain reversals are old hat by now (c.f. Cruella). There's no good approach, everyone knows that
Sooo……the "real story" is that the abused child was actually universally beloved and her only problem in life was being too perfect, and we should feel sorry for her abusers instead? How creepy.

I mean, short of tearing up the story (the ball is a body market?) But that doesn't appeal to kids.

maybe the AI boyfriend / girlfriend thing is going and is going to go the way dating sims work among american gamers: namely, playing dating sims is embarrassing so there's not a huge market for dating sims as such, but if you embed a dating sim into a bigger game american gamers are happy to engage with the dating mechanics there b/c of the plausible deniability similarly maybe we won't see a ton of AI boyfriends / girlfriends as such due to embarrassment, just a growing cohort of people who talk to AI a lot in a way that further siphons their social and perhaps erotic energy away from human contact the way the internet as a whole does

I do wonder when the police got into Gricean pragmatics.
The philosopher Peter Hallward was arrested today for holding a sign saying simply: “In the UK it’s a crime to say I support Palestine Action.” He’s produced some of the best journalism on the proscription of Palestine Action—particularly this article on the Filton 4…

I love how “Quinque” turns the human form into something almost abstract. The figures feel connected in such a natural way that you could stare at this for a while and keep noticing new details.

No progress on transcendental number theory. Four Exponentials and Schanuel’s conjecture will outlive almost every other major well-defined open problem of the twentieth century.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math
