True Food Kitchen has filed Chapter 11. The company plans to close 12 locations, leaving it with 34. It plans to initiate a sale process.
The company was created in 2008 by restaurateur Sam Fox and Dr. Andrew Weil, with Oprah and Howard Schultz among its early backers. The concept’s mission was to serve healthier food.
The company has $42 million in debt and blamed a host of factors for the filing, including management turnover, frequent changes in expansion strategy, shifts in brand strategy that often strayed beyond its core mission, a few weak locations and naturally the pandemic.

NEW: OC DA @toddspitzeroc just threw the book at the woman arrested for purposely fatally crushing a puppy with her vehicle in Santa Ana, CA. 75-year-old Hahn Nguyen has now been charged w/ felony animal cruelty and felony animal abuse w/ a felony enhancement for personal use of a weapon.
DA Spitzer is charging these "wobbler" offenses as felonies instead of misdemeanors and the felony enhancement will add potential prison time.
OC DA statement to @FoxNews:
“This act of violence not only ended the life of an innocent puppy, but it also inflicted trauma on every single person who came across the video footage of the murder of an animal,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “Violence is not a singular act. It inflicts pain and suffering on those who are subjected to it and on those who witness it. As the elected District Attorney of Orange County, I refuse to accept a society in which violence of any kind is acceptable. Let me be clear that those who engage in violence in Orange County, whether it is against human beings or animals, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.”

💸 As of tomorrow, Los Angeles County will have the nation's highest sales tax rates, with some cities as high as 11.75% sales tax. Because they don't already have enough money with 14.4% income tax, high property/gas/utility taxes.
Highest taxes in the POOREST cities - Palmdale & Lancaster, 16% poverty rates in these desert communities. Now paying 11.75% tax on everything they purchase.
I moved to CA in 2013 from New Hampshire, which had 0% sales/income tax, nearly 0 gas tax & vehicle registration fees, but which had next to zero crime, great roads/schools. Why? Because they don't openly STEAL the money. They don't give drug addicted and/or lazy "homeless" people $2 MILLION beachfront condos for life (including all utilities AND HIGH END groceries from stores I won't even step foot in like Bristol Farms)!
Unless something changes immediately, California will soon become a state for the extremely rich & the extremely poor, with no middle class to speak of. And once the remaining extremely rich are driven out by taxes to pay for all the extremely poor, it'll become a failed state as there'll be no one left to pay the high taxes.
Santa Monica 11.25% Sales Tax
Tomorrow, Oct 1, Santa Monica's sales tax hits 11.25%, the highest in the region. That's a half-cent hike from Measure ER, passed by LA County voters in June. For a typical middle-income household spending around $20,000 a year on taxable goods, dining out, gas, clothes, household items, entertainment, that's about $2,250 a year in sales tax alone. Roughly $188 a month.
And this comes on top of the city's own increases over the last 4 years. Water up 20%. Trash up 11% a year. Parking permits nearly doubled, while parking at the promenade has also increased.
The city says it's for services. But when every bill, every meter, and every receipt goes up at once, families feel it. They deserve a council that asks whether we're getting value before we ask for more.
Santa Monica residents deserve to know exactly where every dollar goes. No more blank checks. No more vague promises. We need real transparency, real audits, and real consequences when money is wasted. That's the accountability our city is missing.
Affordability means keeping money in your pocket and letting you decide how to spend it. That's what I'm fighting for as your candidate for Santa Monica City Council.

The University of Miami has received permission from the city of Coral Gables to expand the boundaries of its main campus.
This allows for more buildings (including a new hospital) to be constructed and thousands more students to be enrolled at the university.

The University of Miami strongly supports meaningful national reform that brings greater stability, fairness, and clarity to college athletics. We are especially grateful to Senators Ashley Moody and Rick Scott for their leadership, engagement, and willingness to stand up for Florida’s universities as the Protect College Sports Act moves forward.
Their work to address the bill’s conference realignment provisions is critically important to ensuring that Florida institutions retain the flexibility and opportunity to compete at the highest level in a rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape.
We deeply appreciate their advocacy on behalf of our universities and our student-athletes, and their commitment to getting this important legislation right.
