The strange rock formation called Elephant Head in Antarctica is the focus of a paper by Chris McKay and friends. Chris studied it as an example of dry permafrost, ground containing no ice and permanently below 0° C. It is an analog to similar terrains on Mars.

Enkesha's Keepers describe her as a "Teachers Pet". She is always seeking them out - and a clever girl for it when she knows there's a snack to be found! Wondering about her trunk? We've shared more about what happened to her here: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Elephants adhere to a natural hierarchy based on maturity and, accordingly, it looks like 11 year old orphan Panda has pulled rank and laid claim to the water trough!

This big boy is Challa. It's hard to believe that 15 years ago, he was a starving orphan baby elephant tangled among a herd of cattle. Dedicated daily care, lots of milk and 24/7 protection ensured he survived to become a majestic bull: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Always wanted a straw roof but couldn't afford it? Use the Northern Scandinavian (Sweden, Finland) technique: by far the cheapest and easiest method of thatching a roof. Ten men (beginners and one instructor) can gather and build a roof in a two room cottage in three days.

I like the message here, but this place is in absolute bits ecologically.
Other than mosses, all accessible vegetation has been stripped out by too many deer or other grazers. It's a dying forest.
We need to (re?)acquire the ability to 'read' the health of ecosystems.

Hundreds of Km of hedgerows being "buried alive" and smothered out by plantation forestry in #Leitrim and elsewhere over the years. Needless Destruction of biodiversity, heritage and carbon sinks why? for profit, for investors, for timber, for jobs not good enough!
Hedgerows within forestry are important but are largely ignored by @agriculture_ie FS & FAC. Bats stop feeding along hedges & the hedges seriously decline in diversity once the conifers grow up & shade them out. Not sufficient setbacks to protect @pippa_hackett @noonan_malcolm
