What exactly is your moisturizer made of?
Walk into almost any pharmacy and pick up a moisturizer or sunblock, and you’ll find a long list of ingredients.
But how many of those ingredients are actually familiar to our biology?
Modern skincare has become incredibly complicated.
There are fats.
There are emulsifiers.
There are preservatives.
There are petroleum-derived ingredients.
And then there are endless combinations designed to make a formula feel a certain way on your skin.
At Farrow, we asked a different question:
Can skincare be made with ingredients that make sense?
Our current formulas are built around full-fat, nutrient-rich ingredients—lard, leaf lard, tallow, a little honey, and essential oils in our scented products.
No need to hide what’s inside behind a complicated ingredient list.
Just real ingredients, chosen with intention.
Because sometimes the best way forward is to simplify.

It started with a simple question:
What are we actually putting on our skin?
Just like food labels, skincare labels can be filled with ingredients you can barely pronounce.
For Charles Mayfield, that question became even more important when he looked at his own children and the products being marketed to them.
And the more he looked, the more he questioned the idea that we need a complicated lineup of products and chemicals to have healthy skin.
It was the same philosophy behind his approach to food: go back to the basics. Look at what humans have used for generations. Focus on real nourishment instead of endless processing.
That curiosity eventually led to Farrow.
What started as a desire to create a better option became a mission to rethink modern skincare—starting with the ingredients themselves.
And today, that mission is more important than ever.
Especially when the skincare industry is convincing young girls that they need products their skin never asked for.
Maybe healthy skin doesn't need more.
Maybe it needs less.

The first lard cream we made went bad in less than a week.
And that failure taught us something important.
The recipe started with coconut oil, water, and beeswax. We simply swapped the coconut oil for lard.
The result?
A luscious cream.
Until six or seven days later, when it turned black, smelled terrible, and went rancid.
So we started asking why.
The answer was the water.
That realization changed everything. Instead of trying to make lard behave like a conventional water-based cream, we started working with the natural characteristics of the fats themselves.
Lard. Leaf lard. Tallow.
Each has a different texture and consistency. And by experimenting with their ratios, we were able to create the rich, viscous texture we were looking for—without adding water.
Sometimes the best formulations come from the mistakes that force you to go back to the beginning and understand the ingredients themselves.
That’s how Farrow was born: not by adding more, but by learning how to work with what nature already gave us.

Pigs get sunburned too.
So why do they roll around in the mud?
It’s not because they’re dirty.
In fact, wallowing is one of the ways pigs naturally care for themselves.
Mud serves three important purposes:
Protection from pests like flies and mosquitoes.
Cooling their bodies through evaporation as the wet mud dries.
And protection from direct sunlight and sunburn.
What we often see as “dirty” behavior is actually an intelligent survival mechanism.
Nature tends to have a reason for what it does.
And when we pay attention, we start to understand animals—and the ingredients they provide—in a very different way.
At Farrow, we believe that understanding where our ingredients come from matters.
From healthy animals, raised on healthy land, comes something worth putting on your skin.

How did lard go from a household staple to something we were taught to avoid?
The shift didn’t happen overnight.
When Crisco was introduced, it was marketed as a modern alternative to lard. Even its appearance was changed to resemble what people were already familiar with.
Then came World War II.
From 1940 to 1944, lard was rationed in the United States as fats were needed for the war effort. As households began replacing their cans of lard with manufactured alternatives, a much bigger shift was underway.
Lard fell out of favor.
And with it, we lost more than a traditional cooking fat. Demand for lard-producing pig breeds declined dramatically, changing agriculture and the way we thought about animal fats.
Today, we're taking another look at what was left behind.
Because lard isn't just an ingredient from the past. It's a nutrient-rich, biologically compatible fat that has a place in modern skincare—and one that deserves to be understood beyond the myths and marketing.
Sometimes, looking back helps us understand what we forgot.

Men's skincare is booming.
But does taking care of your skin really need to mean 15 steps in front of the bathroom mirror?
We don't think so
Men have always had a skincare routine.
Soap.
Shaving.
Deodorant.
A little moisturizer when the skin needs it.
And maybe something for those cuts, scrapes, razor burns, sunburns, and windburns that come with actually living in the world.
The skincare industry may be telling men they need more products, more steps, and more ways to “fix” the way they look.
We'd argue for something much simpler.
Take care of your skin. Nourish it. Let it recover.
Then go do something.
Hit the gym. Work outside. Get some sleep. Eat real food. Spend time in the sun.
You don't need to spend 20 minutes staring at yourself in the bathroom mirror to have healthy-looking skin.
Sexy is simple.
Keep your routine simple. Keep your ingredients simple. And stay feral. 🐷

Sometimes the best feedback comes straight from the people using it.
Leah shared her daughter’s experience with Farrow—and hearing her talk about how she’s been feeling in her own skin is exactly why we do what we do.
She loves the way it smells.
She loves using it.
And most importantly, she noticed a difference.
Her mom shared that she used to scratch her legs frequently at school. After using Farrow, she says she’s now only scratching once or twice.
That’s a pretty meaningful change for a kid.
And a little reminder that skincare doesn't have to be complicated.
A little FaceFood goes a long way.
We're so grateful to Leah and her daughter for sharing their experience with us. ❤️

Tallow gets a lot of attention in animal-based skincare.
But is it the clear winner?
We love tallow.
The problem is that most conversations stop there.
Tallow and lard are different fats, and they play different roles on the skin.
Tallow is rich in more occlusive fatty acids. It has a naturally waxier texture and works beautifully as a seal—helping lock moisture into the skin.
Lard is different.
Because it comes from pigs, its fatty acid profile is particularly interesting when it comes to human skin. Its more emollient fats help support moisturization and allow it to absorb into the skin.
So why choose one?
We don't.
At Farrow, we combine lard, leaf lard, and tallow because we believe healthy skin needs both:
Moisturization + protection.
And in our unscented formulas, we add raw honey—a natural humectant that helps draw moisture toward the skin.
It isn't about finding the one “miracle” fat.
It's about understanding what each ingredient does and putting them together intentionally.
Because when it comes to skincare, the whole can be greater than the sum of its fats.

Don't stop at the front of the label.
Marketing claims can sound reassuring, but the ingredient list tells the real story.
Before adding a product to your routine, take a moment to check:
👀 What's listed in the ingredients?
💧 Is water the main ingredient?
🌿 Are the nourishing ingredients near the top—or buried near the bottom?
📖 Can you understand what you're putting on your skin?
At Farrow, we believe informed choices lead to healthier skin. That's why we focus on simple, thoughtfully selected ingredients that nourish your skin instead of relying on unnecessary complexity.

How did one of history's most common cooking fats become one of the most misunderstood?
For generations, lard was a household staple. But over time, changing industries, historical events, and evolving consumer habits shifted people toward new alternatives.
Understanding where our ingredients come from—and why they changed—helps us make more informed choices today.
Sometimes, looking back gives us a better perspective on what we've left behind.
At Farrow, we're passionate about rediscovering traditional ingredients and the role they can play in modern skincare.

The fats we use today haven't always been the norm.
For generations, traditional animal fats were a staple in kitchens around the world. Over time, they were largely replaced by inexpensive industrial oils as food manufacturing evolved.
Today, many highly processed foods rely on refined seed oils because they're widely available and cost-effective.
That's why understanding where your food comes from—and reading ingredient labels—matters more than ever.
Choosing real, minimally processed ingredients is one way to support a more intentional approach to health.

Your skin is not separate from your body.
What goes on it matters.
Skin absorbs.
Interacts.
Transfers ingredients inward.
Yet skincare is often treated differently than food.
People carefully question what they eat.
But rarely question what they apply every day.
The difference is important.
Topical ingredients bypass many of the systems designed to process what we consume orally.
That makes ingredient quality worth paying attention to.
Awareness should extend beyond diet.
It belongs in skincare too.

Your skin already knows what it needs.
Human skin produces sebum.
A natural oil designed to moisturize, protect, and support healing.
The closest external match to that oil is lard.
That compatibility matters.
Healthy skin repair is often less about forcing a process and more about not interrupting it.
Many modern creams rely on long ingredient lists designed for shelf life and stability.
Sometimes what is missing matters just as much as what is included.
Fewer unnecessary additives.
More biologically familiar support.
